From what I've heard, Sony originally planned to have the PS1 play DVDs, but it would have been too expensive, DVDs were only invented the year before.

I'm getting the feeling that some of the warnings in the Japanese manuals are just to make fun of stupid Americans who probably attempted that at some point.
I remember an instance where someone I knew tried putting their PS2 disc into their 360. They said that they were wondering why the disc wasn't working, since the 360 has backward capabilities...
