Title: Super Mario Galaxy 2 is now out. (Contains SPOILERS) Be Warned.
Post by: SkyMyl on May 23, 2010, 11:37:33 AM
All the high praise the reviews have been giving it has suddenly made me anticipate Galaxy 2 a lot more than I did when it was first announced. In one day. IGN doesn't intercourse ing count, by the way. Anyway, how many of you are going to get Galaxy 2?

Since I'm sending in my Wii tomorrow, I'll have to hijack my brother's Wii to play Galaxy 2 when I pick it up on Tuesday. Was going to make a mad dash and pick it up today on a whim, but financial issues denied that plan. I'm hoping the game really is more difficult than Galaxy, as that was Galaxy's biggest flaw, in my opinion.

Plus, Yoshi (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheScrappy) being included is a plus. It means I can abandon him in mid jump over a gaping chasm, and watch as he plummets to his death into a black hole (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VideoGameCrueltyPotential).

I'm staring at the game box right now, but I currently don't have a Wii to play it on. This is torture.

I'm getting it tuesday, probably.

Just a quick note, as a first party Nintendo game on the Wii(a Mario game no less), it'll NEVER come down in price. Mario Galaxy still hasn't, neither has PBR or any of the main Pokemon games.

Didn't know. Edited that answer slightly for no real reason.

Notice how the Wii doesn't have a "Player's Choice" line? Yep. Probably won't ever will either. What changed this gen? Nintendo has basically been printing their own money and doesn't really need the price drops in their games. People still buy them.

But yeah I just read the Destructoid review and I'm pretty psyched. I wish I could go out and get it now but eh...I'll wait.

I have it right here...

Wait, do we agree that Super Mario Galaxy 1 had better storyline while Super Mario Galazy 2 supposedly has better gameplay? Sounds like a Fire Emblem: PoR and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn thing.

Very good point.

All Mario games have the same Story line Anyway ( or at least very close to the same kind ).

I JUST bought it at Toys R Us.....

EVEN THOUGH I reserved this game and bought it in FULL over 11 months ago at Game stop...by the time I got off of work to go to the mall to pick this game up, Game Stop was closed  \: .

So I decided to go to Toys R Us on the way back home... Buy Super Mario Galaxy 2... Then the next day go back to the mall, pick UP another copy of Super Mario galaxy 2 .... then go to Toys R Us and return the one I just bought at Game Stop.

I know what I typed sounds confusing, but over all....... I pretty much get my money back while having the game on the day it came out.

Good things, all Nintendo Wii games have the same Sku's  no matter what store you buy it from. ;D

From what I've played, I like Galaxy 2s storyline more. Much faster without having to insult your intelligence. Also, they finally gave young master Luma a name.

Got it, been playing it almost non-stop. Stopped for dinner and watching MY Blackhawks DESTROY the San Jose Sharks for Western Conference Champs!

Anyway, my thoughts:
1. 55 stars in, World 4, having a blast.
2. In case you're wondering, I AM taking my time. It's not my fault I'm awesome, not to mention years of experience just makes me know how Nintendo designs things. At this point Shigeru doesn't try to surprise me anymore.
3. Except for the intercourse ing secret star in Boulder Bowl Galaxy. C'mon I've destroyed EVERY enemy, EVERY pillar, searched EVERY SQUARE INCH OF THE LEVEL. WHERE IS IT!?
4. Level design is MUCH more solid than Galaxy 1. It was apparent Nintendo realized some of the quirks didn't work, so it sticks to a more traditional Mario layout a lot of the time. Not to say there isn't Galaxy hopping and planetoids, but it's more streamlined than before.
5. Why do we have prankster comets still? It's just laziness on Nintendo's part to not create more stars. Bah. That's my only real gripe.
6. Okay, I have one more. Hungry Luma's are back. Why? Just put the Galaxies there! Don't force me to grind for star bits because you feel like being jerks. Ah, THOSE are my only two gripes. :P
7. Music is AMAZING.
8. None of the controller problems have been fixed. I'm experiencing the same problems in the same places. But since the level design is better, you don't run into them as often.

So far, I'd say this is an improvement over Galaxy. Not a MASSIVE improvement, but I'm certainly enjoying it more, and it feels more Mario than Galaxy 1 did.
And the story is utterly pointless so WHY they put in little cutscenes and try to give the luma's, etc. characters is beyond me. With the new world map, the hub world is POINTLESS. But since you never have to do anything on it, I'll leave it at that.

Ugh.. a big fat purple star...... he insults my name.

A "face ship, har har" ......... are you kidding me??! :|

I'm enjoying the game ... I'm not speeding through either, I'm taking m sweet time and getting everything I can as early as possible, so I don't have to go back and get things.

I've been playing for about an hour... And I'm still on the first area. I beat that stupid King Lakitu Cloud thing......... and that's where I am right now.... Lol at him beating the cloud like a drum. :D

I'm also enjoying the music...

I feel I have a long way to go
0_0

***
Oh, I just beat the "Think Before you Shake, -Flip-swap Galaxy" :D

Good god.

2 things.

1. NO IDEA flipping would make a Chain Chomp roll towards me by it turning like that....... Like...give me a warning! >__<

2. The last jump to get to the Star by jumping in between the electric fence was ...... UGH!!
I made it..but I was like........ "Are you Serious?!" (( :| )) I just stood there for a minute just thinking... "Should I long jump it or go it the normal way"?

I'm just screaming/yelling with loud noises trying not to get hit by it all!

I'm really enjoying the game, but I think I'd have more fun watching others play.
:P
Still, I see why they gave this game a perfect.

Collection is part of every platformer. lol

I don't mind collecting star bits on my way through the levels mainly because its incredibly easy to multitask. You can pull of maneuvers rather easily all while collecting star bits, hell you can even do it in boss fights without trying all that hard. I think you're being a little over critical, but maybe that's just me.

Unless you explicitly say how to get something, you're not really spoiling anything.

Entering World 6 with about 88 or so stars. Worlds 1-3 are 100%, and I'm only missing about one or two in five. One missing in world four but I think it's a scripted event, so I won't deal with it for now.

Got ALL 120 Stars. 3 days this time, although I probably would've had it in two if I didn't have summer class. Oh well. Better than the first by a couple steps, but the same problems in the first one persist here. Still, definite pick-up for anyone with a Wii.
Boss Blitz Galaxy: Prankster Comet Speed Run: BOULDERDASH NEEDS TO DIE! Nintendo, speed running a boss that relies completely on what he decides to do isn't speed running, but whatever. That was...frustrating, but oh so satisfying to kick his sorry ass.

On the contrary, it's my thought that we'll see a re-release of several Wii games at a lower price near the end of the console's life. They took quite a few titles, such as Shake It! off the market pretty quickly that would benefit from the price drop. Face it, printing money or not, selling more copies at a lower price makes more money than total withdraws. So I'm quite confident in saying we'll see some form of action from Nintendo on that front with titles like Endless Ocean (perhaps bundled), the Excite series, Mario Party/Strikers/etc, PBR, etc. Whether or not it's a players choice line or bundle is TBD imo, but SOMETHING will happen.

And haven't started Galaxy 2 yet. D:

It's been nearly 4 years and we still don't have a Player's Choice line, or any reduced prices for games like Brawl, Galaxy, Pokemon, hell even Mario Party 8 is still the original retail price last I saw it.

Could it happen? I suppose so. But it definitely isn't on Nintendo's list of priorities. Their competitors have had Greatest Hit's and Platinum Hit line ups for a few years now. So they better get on the ball soon if they're going to do it.

Yes, finally, I have a song that I can say I like the most out of the game thus far.

Beat Box Galaxy ! :D
As simple as the song/beat is, I can imagine a lot of people having trouble with it....cause they lack rhythm. heheheh. :P

I'm not as fast as Nayr, but I don't play it constantly either!

Right now, I have 44 Stars.
I think I'm going at a slow yet steady pace.

I fear like Zelda Twi Light Princess, once I beat this game and full, I won't play it again.

Galaxy 1 came out when I was nearing the end of winter semester in that fall. Only had about two and a half hours a day to play it.
Galaxy 2, yea I have more time but it's harder. Actually, I'm surprised it took me as long as I did to get the first 120.

Well, I'm on the green stars challenges, and they're not that challenging. Actually the way you have to play to get the green stars is how I play normally, a.k.a. the Mario 64 way of just checking everywhere for poops. This is almost too easy early on. Ah well, halfway done with world 3, have 166 stars. Should have 'em all done by the end of the weekend provided nothing serious comes up. Yay.

I have class tomorrow morning but after that I"m free until Tuesday, so I'll be done by the end of the weekend.
Yeah I just have the last level of world 5 and then all of world 6 except Throwback. Also the special world if they have them but I cant imagine how some of the galaxies in that would work (like Boss Blitz).

Looking at the weather right now I don't think I'll be working tomorrow or Friday so I should be done by the weekend.

I'm actually really enjoying the Green stars. Most of them are easy to get but others have been pretty hard.

Some people may consider Majora's Mask better but that doesn't mean it was rated higher.

OoT was the top rated game for years and years. I consider it to be even with Galaxy 2 so it doesn't matter to me which is rated higher really but it's nice to see something new on top.

I would love to see Zelda Wii beat Galaxy 2 when it comes out.

I've got 40 stars and I'm still in World 3. Gotta love those Cosmic Coins.

Also, the Galaxy in World 3 that you can only access by feeding the Luma 1000 star bits? That was one of the most awesome things ever.

RAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!

Oh, yea, was a great game. Loads of fun the entire way. The green stars... were supposed to be hard right? RIGHT? Those were pretty easy actually. Basically I just had to play each level again like I normally do. Ha ha. Grandmaster Galaxy was awesome. Truly. Thanks for the great game Nintendo, honest.

Now, as far as the "highest rated game of all time" thing that's going around. Eh, I'd still say it's too early to tell. To be honest Ocarina of Time still feels like the epic masterpiece that it was 12 years ago. If Galaxy 2 holds up for 5-10 years and is still as great then as it is now, then I shall agree that it really is that great.

you only need to store 9999 star bits in the bank Toad to get the Pankster Comet to appear in Grandmaster.
Go to the first level of World 6 (the lava one) and spam the crap out of the second star (a stroll down boulder lane). It's an easy way to get star bits. If you're good at the level, you can get close to 150 star bits a run. Just jump off and kill yourself at the end, and repeat until you get maxed out. You won't run out of lives if you get 100 each time.
If you jump properly, you can conserve the maximum of 3 clouds to use as help in the flipswitch part of the level. Also, remember you can take it slow. It isn't a speed run. Also, the laser machines in that section will stop firing after you pass them for some reason. The hammer brothers are easy for me. Remember that Star Bits are useless at this point. If you die quite a few times and get some star bits collected, you can always shoot those at a hammer bro to stall them so you can kill them. Also, keeping Cloud Mario keeps your jump physics better. Use that to your advantage to take shortcuts in the Hammer Bro section.
hope that helps

At this point, you probably can't SkyMyl

Oh, and SomeGuy, I recorded the video. I need to export the raw file with audio, then I'll do the editing. I'll also go about talking about tips on how I did it to help others out if they need it. I still died a TON though. Mostly on the end section. Ugh, it's not HARD, Mario's just programmed...stupidly.
for example, Mario can't spin and then jump right out of it, which is odd considering Crash Bandicoot could do that in 1995. Also, you cannot jump while doing the "kicking" animation of killing an enemy. Basically, you're glued do the ground a lot at the very last part, making it REALLY easy for them to hit you. Oy Vey.

Thanks Nayr. But I've just about got it. At this point the only thing that stands between me and the star is the last little bit. I've played the rest so much it's almost second nature.

With no checkpoints it feels like I've died and my punishment is to be doomed to play the same sections of level over and over and over for all eternity.

Welcome to classic gaming my friend.
Back in the day, pretty much all the games were like that, usually with only one checkpoint halfway. Ah, takes me back. I'll get the video up soon.

Remember, it's better to not hit the Boomerang Bro if another one is about to throw it. Let them lie on their back for a few seconds and take out the attacking ones. A stalled Bro is better than one throwing crap at you.

Oh I've been playing games my whole life. I know what it was like. But even the original Super Mario Bros had a check point every world.

This is more compareable to Zelda II. Every gameover it takes you back to the start of the game (though it saves progress). It doesn't really add to the difficulty but it makes where you were stuck a bit of a walk away. More tedious than hard.

Yeah navigating it wasn't really hard but the clouds let me be a lot quicker so the Hammer bros had less time to hit me. Like most of my deaths came from getting hammered as I was making my way across those flipping platforms so I just skipped that.
I only used one cloud on the flip switch part. I did it so many times I was able to make it past the first three shockwave things no problem, After that I could just long jump, make a cloud and long jump off that and I was at the Sling Star.

Modest.

I've been playing since I was 3 but I'll bet you got a clear time on the last star where I died so many times that it took so long the game pretty much just said "**** it I lost count of how many hours he's been trying this".

Granted I was half asleep (from being up almost all night before) but I don't count that as an excuse since I've beaten tons of games like that.

Ouch, having just one star is like very unfortunate.

Just placed an order for mine on amazon... does anyone have any idea on the usual shipping time?

I can't wait to get this game. It's been a while since I've been this hyped about a wii game.

Can someone explain to me what these green stars are? Is it better than Galaxy 1's "play the game again as Luigi, to get a super special level... which was just the first one with purple coins"?
The Green Stars are actually hidden stars across all the galaxies. You need to look everywhere for them.

I've completed all the Green Stars up to World 4. It's so fun to find them all. :D
I hate the Green Star 1 in Boo Moon Galaxy, though. >:(

Sniff.
I completed the whole game with the 242 stars. The final level was so awesome, especially the final Comet Medal. Those last enemies didn't hit me in the first try.

Play Time: 23:03:56 - (I blame Mr. Fluzzard for this mostly).
I stopped putting it off and started going for the Green Stars. Finished up World 1 and most of the annoying Galaxies. (read: Tall Tree Trunk, Fluzzard, Rainbow Roll) Currently finishing World 2. Currently starting World 6. I stopped there for the night. Bowser Jr's Boom Bunker's second GS was such an obnoxious one to find.

I warmed up to it. At first I thought it was a cheap way to increase play time, but it's not that bad.

Started World 2. Just running through the game. I'll go after the comet coins afterward.

I finally got the last star. My time was 30 something, but I've left the game on at Starship Mario for about a week now after getting killed by the last boomerang bro. That would explain it I think.

That reminds me, where's the Sonic Green Hill-looking planet I heard about before?

It's somewhere in World S. When you complete the Galaxy, instead of a star, there will be a slice of cake as your reward.
