While Pikachu has been Pokemon's unofficial mascot for...ever, Mudkip has garnered recent fame over 4chan starting the internet fad "so i herd u liek mudkipz?"

Then you have to think of real life, where most society has never heard of 4chan, or the up and coming fad.

What is this real life you speak of?

Also, I dunno if I'd call it up and coming, "so i herd u liek mudkipz" has been around for awhile. But you raise a good point.

In case you don't know, My mom knows Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, and Pikachu the best.

An old co-worker of mine knows the same characters.

Pikachu is definitely more recognizable than Mudkip.

Mudkip is only well-known to people who spend too much time on the internet, myself included.

My mom knows the first-generation starters, as Wild C said. Anything later than that, I doubt anyone knows. People only really remember Pokemon's trademark, Pikachu, and the starters of the first generation when Pokemon's popularity was at its highest.
