Title: Guitar.
Post by: Ron on April 14, 2009, 04:12:20 PM
Anyone else here play guitar? I've been playing since December now and have kinda taught myself all the basic chords, plus a few of the more difficult such as F.

I've also written several songs (This was before I was playing guitar) and had always thought how cool it'd be to actually make them into real songs with guitar...And so today I finally got around to doing that (instead of my petty covers that I've been doing)

This is the result -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjqnqz8gkKM

I'm asking for constructive criticism, if anyone feels up to it. You can also get to my other stuff like my covers from that link, if you're interested.

And feel free to discuss playing guitar and music in general as well.

I can only play various forms of bass, and I've been trying in vain to self-teach guitar, so nice job on learning, first of all. =D

Honestly, the song is a little... ordinary(?), but it's decent nonetheless; I like it. It seems like the verses and stuff blend into each other really fast (maybe try to space things out a little more), but melodically you're on the right track.

Singing isn't that bad either; better than me anyway. Nice job for one of your firsts.

I've been playing guitar since I was 4.

Yesterday I spent an hour figuring out how to play Girl by The Beatles. It took me a while to realize they had a capo on the 8th fret. >.>

Also, the song is really good. It's really catchy.  Your voice is pretty good too. :)

I like the song. Guitar playing was nice and tied together the lyrics. ^_^ You just need to practice your singing to get some notes in tune and whatnot.
As for me I can't play the guitar, but my brother can.  =P And I can't sing worth a flip.  D=

I tried to learn some stuff on my sisters guitar. I couldn't get past learning how to read sheet music. Although I did learn how to play Mary had a little lamb.

I was going for ordinary. :] I honestly wrote the guitar part for it in like 5 minutes, I had already written the song almost a year ago xD
So I realize it definitely needs some tweaking...and my voice has always been a little shaky xP

Thanks everyone for the comments.

I can play guitar, but I almost never do. I much prefer the piano.

I have tried writing my own pieces, but those are major fails. >.<

Though I can play many artist's songs like Metallica, Oasis, Beatles etc.  Just yesterday I finally learned Wonderwall.  ;D

i've been playing guitar for a couple years now ur pretty good for someone that's only been playing for 5 months. good voice. nice rythym. you said u took like 5 minutes to write the guitar. it looked like you didn't use many different chords. when you tweak it you should maybe experiment with some other chords to give the melody more flavor. you're on the right track. i've written a number of riffs, but only one song which has no lyrics.

I will have been playing for a year this summer (i think). I can't play clean chords, but I can play power chords well (anyone can :(). I can play Iron Man, (basically) Smoke on the Water, Blitzkrieg Bop (like I said: "anyone can"), Devil's Child (by Judas Priest), some Zelda songs. That's about it. Oh and I can't play play any of the solos in those songs.  :( I usually stick to riffs.

Anyway, great song. Also, great voice and great lyrics. You have a lot of potential. Just be confident and make sure your voice is as clear as possible. Maybe add a bass guitar and some softly played, simple drums? Stick to it though.

Our journeys may be different but our destination is the same. (lol, good lyrics right there eh?)

I've been playing guitar for 4-5 years now.

Recently began taking lessons, stopped taking them. I plan on doing some hardcore practice during the summer (of course taking lessons again).

I'll see if I can record some cover this weekend and post it :P

Really? I've only seen three string power chords in the "shape" of (example)

-------

---3---

on different frets and strings as well etc. Or is this a power chord as well?

-------
-------
---4---

Someone told me that it wasn't, but I thought it was. Actually, I think there are more power chords than I thought. I might try some Rancid songs though (only song I've heard is "Salvation"  :( Guitar Hero II).  They're pretty good.

They're in the opposite direction.

Anyway, I've been playing for two years, but haven't made much progress. I can play full chords and tap, though.

TerribleFrog, just a tip:P

e--------

Always label tablature like that. It's just much easier to recognize, etc.

Metalbott, thanks for the tip. I just forgot/didn't think it was needed.

I've had a guitar since christmas but I still really have no idea what I'm doing.  I've tried looking things up online and stuff, but it really hasn't helped.  I want to take lessons, but my parents won't get me any until we move (again).

Oooh, too bad. Stick with it though! I'm in about the same situation, except I'm not going to move and I don't have any plans to take lessons. I might in the future. Anyway, just try some very easy songs. You really need to get the hang of reading tablature (spelling?) and sheet music in general. Luckily, most tabs come with a "key" to tell you what each letter or symbol means. Also, not all tabs are accurate, and many of them are meant to just give you the basic idea of the song; then you tweak it yourself. A "how-to-play" book (not a song book) can be good to learn from too.

Here are some suggestions to get you started:

"Blitzkrieg Bop" by Ramones
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/r/ramones/blitzkrieg_bop_ver6_tab.htm (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/r/ramones/blitzkrieg_bop_ver6_tab.htm)

"Iron Man" by Black Sabbath
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/b/black_sabbath/iron_man_tab.htm (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/b/black_sabbath/iron_man_tab.htm)

"In Bloom" by Nirvana
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/n/nirvana/in_bloom_ver4_tab.htm (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/n/nirvana/in_bloom_ver4_tab.htm)

And of course:
"Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/d/deep_purple/smoke_on_the_water_tab.htm (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/d/deep_purple/smoke_on_the_water_tab.htm)

Just remember that there are many different ways to play a song, many different tabs, and not all of them are accurate. Also, don't worry about the symbols you don't know. Half the time it won't matter if it sounds good.

I don't know if that helps. Actually, you've probably already tried these songs, but just practice until it sounds good! (Also, practice with an amp at least have the time if you have an electric. It really helps to learn the sounds. Just fool around with it! It can make some great noises, especially if you have a tremolo bar a.k.a. whammy bar.) That goes for all beginning guitarists (like me!).

I started lessons a few months ago, and the teacher moved me up a class because I already knew all the basic chords, plus a few extra like F and those 2 other chords that look like
e---2----   e---2----
B---3----   B---2----
G---4----   G---3----
D---4----   D---4----
A---2----   A---4----
E--------   E---2-----

I finished that class and moved on to another, but have decided recently to stop going, because all the teacher seems to do is give us tablature and play it with us. (It's a group class), and I learn way more from just looking up stuff on my own and playing. I've discovered that some things get easier to play (Such as the intro riff to Crazy Train) with a lot of practice.

I recently bought this recording program called "Sessions" and recorded a few things.

You can check them out by downloading them

Oblivious Girl (I changed things up a bit, but just to let you know something went wrong at the end and it got a bit fuzzy. And the timing was a bit off. so don't be too harsh it's the stupid program) - http://www.mediafire.com/?3iymwdzjy1m

Funny song I wrote called "Everything Rhymes with Am" - http://www.mediafire.com/?yz2ng2mjzmz

Acoustic song, no lyrics. Just thought it sounded cool - http://www.mediafire.com/?wdjtdx5mdmz
