I think the character level issues are somewhat poorly handled in that game. Beyond the beginning, you can't easily let a new person join because their character would be too weak and die all the time and do insignificant damage to monsters, while you also break the game by sending your strong character to a memory card that isn't as far in the story.

I mostly played the game with one friend, but those issues specifically drove me away from even trying to play by myself or with a different person more than a tiny bit.
