Title: The Warm Feeling of Victory (CYOA)
Post by: SkyMyl on October 25, 2010, 07:03:33 PM
Ahhhh, Fall. Also known as Autumn, Fall was never one of your favorite seasons. It was a time for sweeping leaves, snuggling in bed, and staying indoors as much as you could, in your eyes. While the gray sky outside was looming over your house and the surrounding forest, you shrugged it off as you continued with your day. After all, you just finished everything on your to-do list. Cleaning the small house, throwing out old food, and deleting some files that used up too much precious memory on your computer only took a couple of hours, and there was still an entire day left.

Nonchalantly falling down onto the couch, you decide to turn your TV on, which was still set to "VIDEO 3" from your marathon two days ago. You casually flip it back over to the default setting and start channel surfing. You look for the weather channel, and when it shows up and tells you just how cold it is outside, a small chill goes up your spine in reaction. Today was a windy day, and with the temperature as low as it is, going outside for little reason other than to restock is pointless.

Yet, as cold as it is, something in your mind makes you want to go outside. There definitely isn't anything to spend the rest of your day with other than lounging around, but the outside world seems so inviting on this windy, cloudy day.

What to do, what to do...

Stay inside your cozy house
Venture outside (http://nsfcd.com/index.php?topic=36867.msg580975#msg580975)

You're voting "stay inside", right? Because the way you posted leads me to assume you think this is an RP, which it isn't.

Sounds to me like he initially chose "stay inside", but then moved to vouch for "venture out".

Also, I choose to go outside.

Can't stay a rock inside a house forever, ze. I say we see what's outside the house.

I don't even know how to RP.  I just felt like writing what I thought was going through the main characters head.

I was voting go outside, though.

All right, then. I really couldn't tell if it was an RP-esque post or if you were voting to go outside. That said...

"I think I'll head outside today. There's nothing to watch on TV, and I can do anything on my computer at a later time. It's better to spend the day outside, even if it's cold."

You go to your closet and put on some warmer clothes for outside, instead of your pajamas. After putting on a jacket and a pair of jeans, you're all set to head outside into the chilly woods. You reach over to your computer desk where your keys and your phone are, and put them both into your pocket. After all, being locked out of your house with no one to call would mean you'd have to break into your own house.

Upon opening the front door, a rush of wind rushes past you and into the house, forcing a chill to run throughout your body. Paying no mind to the wind, you lock the door behind you to make sure no one finds your house vacant, filled with your personal belongings ready to be snatched. You turn around and start walking in a straight path, taking the time to enjoy the scenery as you walk down the road ahead of you.

As you walk down the leaf filled path, you can't help but feel that you forgot to do something back the house before you left...something rather important. You haven't traveled too far from the house, so there's still time to go back and see if you did forget to do something before you left.

Go back to the house
Keep going down the path

Not entirely knowing what it is you forgot, you decide to return to your house in hopes of figuring it out. Wasn't like you were really far away from your house anyway. Taking a deep breath, you turn around and start walking back to your cozy, humble abode.

Some time later, you whip the keys out of your pocket and unlock the front door to your house, still not sure why you decided to come back. Once you go inside the house, the door immediately shuts behind you without your own input. It's a little dark inside your house, so you reach near the door for the light switch, to brighten the room up and get a better view.

And then you remember what you forgot: an apple! In a bit of a rush, you dash to the fruit basket in your kitchen before you forget again and pick up the only remaining apple inside the basket. Chuckling to yourself, you lightly throw the apple into the air and catch it, repeating the same motion as you walk back out the front door.

Until you hear a voice.

"Why..."

You pull a 180 and turn around to see if there's anyone behind you, and it doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe coming back to your house wasn't such a good idea if someone managed to break in without any external or internal damage done to your property.

"Why...did you leave me?"

Instantly, the voice is recognizable. The voice belongs to your ex-girlfriend.

"'We'll be together forever'...that's what you told me..."

Why would your ex break into your house? It's been two months since you two last saw each other, but for her to break into your house seems...drastic. For what purpose would she be here?

"How could you...*sob*...lie to me like that?"

You still haven't found her yet. Your eyes are darting all across the room, searching for her, and you're too afraid to approach her, or even speak to her. You quietly inch your way backwards, towards the door in an effort to escape. Who knows if she broke into your house with the intent to kill you, right? Your trembling hand reaches for the doorknob behind you, and quietly, you turn the knob and lightly pull the door...

*Creaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaak...*

The door doesn't abide by your stealthy intentions, and lets out an eerily slow creak. If she truly was there, you were about to find out.

"Did you just come back in, my love? Isn't it nice outside?"

Her voice changed once the door cracked. It didn't sound pained, upset, and on the verge of tears...it sounded calm, polite...and somewhat resentful.

"I hope you enjoyed the Autumn air in the time you were outside...you'll be inhaling smoke in just a few more minutes!"

She steps out from behind the kitchen counter across the room, brandishing a large, sharp, knife. You don't notice any other details regarding her appearance, as you dash out the front door and slam it behind you, once you noticed the knife. Knowing full well her actions aren't at all good, you sprint as fast as you can, away from her.

It's then you realize you are still running in a straight line, towards the fork in the road coming up. You steal a brief glance behind you and find that she's nowhere to be seen in the path you just traveled. Maybe she didn't bother to follow you, as unlikely as that sounds.

...or maybe she dived into the woods, hiding behind the trees. You don't want to stay in one place for too long, so you keep running towards the fork in the road. From what you can remember, going left leads deeper into the woods, and going right leads to a small shop.

If only you never went back for the apple.

Go deeper into the woods
Go visit the shop

And this is why I'm an oranges person.

Well, we're definitely not running any deeper into the forest...unless she suspects that we'll go to the shop, in which case she'll have an ambush ready!  Obviously, the logical choice is to run deeper into the woods, but if she suspects that I will make that choice, she'll ambush me there...

Oh boy...okay...

I'll just say we choose the funner sounding option and run deep into the woods, away from civilization with a crazy killer.

"*Pant* Can't...keep running*gasp*for much...longer...I*pant*should probably stuh...stop..."

You slow your running speed down. If you kept going, you would have collided with the sign just in front of you, and died from exhaustion. You've reached the fork in the road, which has a worn out wooden sign with three lines of directions written on it.

"<- Left: Moonlit Woods"
"<- Further left: Manā no Hogo
"Right: Millard's Wares ->"

The name of the large estate always sounded retarded to you, but not more than the sign misleading anyone who reads it, as there's a whole forest to go through that takes at least a few hours to traverse on foot. And all you really have is an apple with you. Going through the forest with an upset ex-girlfriend is really stupid, but you don't have that much money to buy anything to defend yourself with...assuming that shop even has such products. It all boils down to whether or not she's still following you or not, which is nearly impossible to tell with the wind blowing leaves all around.

There's only one quick solution: you reach into your left jeans pocket and pull a quarter out. Heads to go into the woods, right to visit the shop. You flip the coin as well as you possibly can, unable to reach a decision yourself. The coin flips three times in the air before it falls to the ground with the satisfying sound coins always make when they tip over.

...heads.

"Why am I even trusting a stupid coin with my life?" you question.

You bend over and pick the coin back up, and put it into your pocket. Armed with a phone, an apple, house keys, and a small amount of pocket change, traverse the path onto the left, leading deeper into the woods, also leading into dangerous territory...

...

...

After a few minutes of walking down this path, you're clearly in the neck of the Moonlit Woods, where the leaves turn a particularly pale white when they fall off the trees, no matter the season. It's said that the large trees of the Moonlit Woods, appear to bend and twist in different directions each time the wind blows, as if they were feeling pain for each sudden gust of wind. It's because of this that many travelers, unfamiliar with the woods, are rarely, if ever, seen again after they've entered these woods; on windy days like this, the tree's shapes never look familiar after only a mere ten minutes.

Even to you, a person who has traversed these woods numerous times, thus one who knows how to avoid being lost in such a familiar place, the Moonlit Woods are a tiresome place. There are no maps, and no shortcuts for a place as massive as this. Only hours of walking. Taking in a deep breath, you walk right into the woods, alert for any sounds or movements that don't belong to you, being careful so as to not make noise yourself.

*CRUNCH* *CRUNCH* *CRUNCH* *CRUNCH* *CRUNCH

The leaves aren't as willing to go through with this idea, however.

"Hello again, honey♥"

Seems like your ex found out where you were going off to...with a tone of voice that sounds suspiciously concerned about you.

"Why did you run away from me? I only wanted to give you a hug..."

Just like back at your house, you start looking around. Behind you, behind the nearby trees, in the treetops...you can't pinpoint exactly where her voice is coming from, but she's definitely very close to you.

"You ran out the door like you had seen a demon devouring a loved one...could it be that...y-you're afraid of me?

She sounded like she was about to go through another mood swing, all in the frame of one minute. Maybe she's just having mood swings...could be that time of the month, right? Whatever is going on with her, maybe you were just seeing things back at the house...yeah, there could be a chance you were hallucinating from something, and imagined she was holding a knife.

...but if that's the case, did you really hear what she was saying? And why was she even inside your house to begin with? You never gave her a key to the house, but it didn't seem like there were any signs of a break-in...

Now what? One wrong choice could possibly lead to your death...

Ask her to show herself
Ask her why she broke into your house
Tell her you want to give her a hug
Run away

This.  Get too close, and it won't be pretty.  Seem too distant, and she'll probably go berserk.  Just play inbetween and see how unstable she really is.

It's a risk, but it's one that you're willing to take. If you've learned anything from the world of games, it's that the harder choices always lead to a brighter future. Channeling your courage, you decide to ask her if she wants a hug.

"...really? You're really accepting of me wanting to give you a hug?"

Her voice seems to perk up even more now that you've told her you want to return the favor. It seems like things are going smooth so far.

"But if you honestly wanted to hug me, then why did you run in terror?"

("...poop! I don't know how to answer this without getting her angry!")

"Sorry if it seemed that way, I only wanted to lead you into this more romantic setting. This was a set up reminiscent of back in the day together... Don't you remember?"

You say, hoping if this set up isn't reminiscent of anything the two of you shared together, you can at least bullpoop a similar situation or hope she goes along with it for fear of seeming like she forgot something important.

Summoning up your courage once again, chancing your luck twice over, you decide to bullpoop your way out of this and bring up an event that never happened.

"Sorry if it seemed that way, I only wanted to lead you into this more romantic setting. This was a set up reminiscent of back in the day together... Don't you remember?"

Hopefully, her memory isn't that stellar, you think to yourself.

"...how sweet of you to remember..."

It took some time for her to reply, as if she was trying to grasp what you had just said. And when she did speak, her tone of voice once again sounded different from before. It sounded like she was pained to hear you bring up a (fake) memory.

Immediately after she spoke, the branches on the treetops began to shake violently, causing some leaves to fall off the branches they were attached to. At the same time, a powerful gust of wind blows right past you, knocking you off your feet, onto the ground below you. Just as you start to get up, you can hear the sound of your ex-girlfriend landing on the ground. You scramble to your feet and sprint away from her, once again. Just like before, she wastes no time in chasing after you.

You continue to run past all the trees, not even paying attention to which direction you're going in, as long as you can make it out alive.

"Where's that hug you promised, you lying bastard!? If you want to be afraid of the woman who you claimed you would never abandon, then I'll be sure show you no mercy!"

You steal a quick glance behind you to see just how close she is, and find that she's only a few feet away from you. For every step you take away from her, she takes two steps closer to you...and it doesn't seem like she's getting tired from chasing you down, unlike you, who's out of breath, and slowing down. When you look ahead of you to see where you're going, you trip on a small rock that was poking out of the dirt, landing face first onto the ground.

Once again, you try to regain your footing, only to feel your ex-girlfriend's weight on your back, and her hand forcing your head into the ground further.

"There never was a day like this. Maybe you experienced a day like this with some other whore, but not with me...I never forgot anything we did together."

You bit off more than you could chew. Without getting the chance to apologize, she forces something very sharp into your lower back, causing you to scream out in pain...it seems she was holding a knife after all.  She pulls it out and thrusts it back in...and she pulls it out and stabs you again...and again...and again...and again...

BAD END

...tails.

You kneel over to pick the coin back up, and start rummaging through all of your pockets. Unfortunately, all you have is that one quarter, and the apple you went back home for. With a sigh, knowing full well that insufficient funds at Millard's Wares usually leads to a harsh lashing, you stick with the coin flip and walk to the right.

[Transition period]
You could also watch this for a good transition. (http://danbooru.donmai.us/post/show/516528/-_-_-_-3-3-anger_vein-angry-annoyed-arms_up-bat_wi)

After walking down the right path for some time, with little to comment on, you've reached Millard's Wares. A small house, adorned with signs encouraging anyone passing by to shop their, as, according to one sign, it would be their "last chance to stock up!". Bracing yourself for the standard insults the usual clerk typically spats out at costumers, you walk inside the shop, which itself is also rather small, but also somewhat cozy. A blue and white tiled floor, wooden shelves all against the walls, stocked with food and emergency supplies, such as pre-made first aid kits, and a small fridge, containing an assortment of beverages.

"Welcome to Millard's Wares, sir! You need help searching for anything?"

Your eyes light up at the sound of this voice. It isn't the voice of the grouchy, irritable, middle-aged old man that happens to drive costumers away, but the serene, calming, and best of all, polite voice of his daughter, whom you've happened to seen around the area recently. Since you're currently single, you have been thinking of asking her out one of these days...

...but you shake your head and remember that you've got an ex-girlfriend chasing after you. It's definitely not the time for this. You turn towards the counter where she is, and take one moment to steal a glance at her...long, brown hair, tied in a ponytail, green eyes, the perfect chest size...three of your weaknesses when it comes to physical appearances in women. Reminding yourself to not stare, you go ahead towards the counter, place your left hand on it, and ask

"Yes, actually. Would you happen to have a baseball bat in stock?"

The girl tilts her head to the left, crosses her arms, and closes her eyes. Seems like she's trying to remember whether or not they have bats. After a minute, she opens her eyes and says

"Yes, actually. We should have at least one in the basement...hang on, just let me go back and find it."

She turns around, opens a door behind her, and walks away, leaving you all alone in the store. Just you, what's on the shelves, what's in the fridge, and what's in the cash register.

...

...OF COURSE! It may be immoral and wrong, but maybe if you took some money from the cash register to buy the necessary supplies, then you could pay it with the money you just stole, getting it all for free! Or you could outright steal something right now instead of doing it the complicated way. As long as you don't get caught, you should be able to get away with it.

What do?

Wait for her to come back

"Stealing won't get me any points with her, or whatever the hell is waiting in the afterlife. I should just wait for her to come back and figure out what to do by then.", you think to yourself.

You continue to stand in front of the counter, waiting patiently for this girl to come back...and fortunately, you don't have to wait much longer, as the door behind the counter swings open again, the girl returning with a wooden baseball bat in hand. She closes the door and places the bat onto the counter.

"Phew, that took some work to get. That's all you're going to buy?"

"Yeah, I'm a little shorthanded on cash to be honest. How much is the bat?"

"Only fifteen dollars."

Fifteen dollars for a wooden baseball bat? That's surprisingly cheap, you wonder...but still too expensive for you to afford. Armed with only a quarter and an apple, that baseball bat is something you could really use for your defense, though not necessarily to kill with.

What do you do now?

Since the story is going by your own view, meaning it varies between users, "the perfect chest size" for you could mean a flat chest, if you want it.

With some quick thinking, you come to the conclusion that the only thing you can offer her in your inventory is your apple. You reach deep into your left jacket pocket and pull the apple out, whimsically, and place it on the counter in place of actual money."

"Um...will this do for now?"

The girl stares wide eyed at you in response to this display of...poverty. She smirks, and picks up the apple.

"Do you have any actual cash on hand, as opposed to this apple?"

You can feel your face turn a shade of bright red as you reach into your other jacket pocket to pull out that one quarter of yours, which you quietly place on the counter. She lets out a sigh, takes the quarter, and places it into the cash register.

"Just this once, I''ll let ya buy something without paying full price. If my Dad were here, you would be thrown out the store."

She hands you the bat with a slightly disappointed look on her face. Still feeling embarrassed, you take the bat and nod your head to her.

"Don't worry, I'll pay you back the money I owe if I'm still alive!"

"If you're still alive? What do you me-"

"My apologies, milady, I can't exactly tell you what it means just yet."

Before taking your leave, you lean over the counter, feeling (suddenly) confident, and peck her on the cheek. Instead of receiving a slap to the face, you're greeted with the sight of her incredibly red face, an expression of shock replacing the sweet, kind demeanor you saw moments ago.

Without saying anything more, you sprint out the store, armed with a new weapon to defend yourself with. But only as you're standing outside the store does it occur to you that a baseball bat already exists in your possession, inside your bedroom closet back home.

"Ah well, too late for that. I'm not heading back home just for a baseball bat."

You could, however, go back home for anything else you might need...or you could just go back home feeling twice as safe as you did before, and just lounge around...your ex-girlfriend might not be there anymore.

You decide to walk back home, now that you've armed yourself with a bat, and lost your apple. Maybe get another apple from back home, and go see your friend across the forest...if you don't run into your ex again, that is.

[Nothing happens on the way back to your house]

After a few minutes of walking, baseball bat perched on your shoulder, ready to be swung, you can see your house not too far away. Wasting no further time, you begin to run towards your only potential safe haven, and proceed to trip onto the ground. The baseball bat rolls a few feet ahead of you as you struggle to regain your footing. Then you realize what you tripped on: your front door. You grab the bat and resume your running, as you find that the door was, indeed, ripped from its hinges.

You let out a deep sigh, and ignore this problem for now. Stumbling back into your house, which now has leaves scattered onto the floor, you walk back to the kitchen to grab another apple and...the basket only has bananas and pomegranates in it.

"Damn it all...I can't get into Eri's Manor without an apple!"

Then a burst of inspiration rushes into your head. You made it back to your house, alive. Your ex is nowhere in sight, for now, and you can stock up on anything you need to while you're here. Taking this opportunity, you dash towards your bedroom and pick up your (rather expensive) conveniently waterproof backpack, and after a quick romp through the house, you now have two bottles of your favorite beverage on the side pouches, a flashlight, your HD camera that your ex gave to you, two sandwiches you prepared the other night for lunch, and a flat bedsheet (never know when you might need it) inside your backpack. And you even remembered to stow your wallet back into your pocket, for future measure. Armed with a baseball bat, a backpack of supplies, and a good sum of money, you're all set for whatever is to come.

 • Camera
 • Flashlight
 • Two sandwiches (FOOD)
 • Bedsheet
 • Drinks

There's a few really profitable options at your disposal, now that you've got your wallet and a baseball bat. Which one should you tackle, though?

Go through the forest
Go back to the store to repay your debt

Now that you have your wallet, it's only right that the store gets the money you owe back. Thinking it best not to keep the girl waiting, you walk out of your house, and begin to trek all the way back to the store.

Walking down the dirt path for the fourth time today feels repetitive, almost as if there's really no point in going back and forth. But then, the wind begins to pick up full force, blowing leaves right past you, threatening to make you lose your footing. As you stand firm, withstanding the wind, however, you don't realize that someone has been trying to communicate with you over the sound of the wind. Until, of course, a hand places itself onto your shoulder. You turn around to see your ex-girlfriend, standing right behind you.

"There you are. I was wondering where you went off to, in such a hurry. Thought you went into the woods, until I saw you going back this way."

You don't move. She sounds...normal. Not like the sorrowful, vengeful girl that you saw back at your house...

"Why'd you run away from me like that?"

You take a step forward and turn around to face her. You can see that she's barely changed. Long, brown hair, brushed all the way down to her waist, brown eyes...and curiously enough, her attire consists of a grey jacket, a red skirt, and grey thighhighs that ended just where the skirt ended, revealing a small portion of her legs.

...this is obviously significant, but you don't realize it. The lady did ask you a question, however. And she seems stable. Perhaps you were really just imagining your ex as a Yandere, after all...she deserves an answer, regardless.

"I thought you were trying to kill me."
"Well...why did you break into my house like that, anyway?"
Run away, LIKE A BOSS.

Being forward and upfront is best. Besides, now we can gauge her reaction and see if she snaps or can give a perfectly reasonable answer to the question.
