You can't kill Johnson with a pickax. Hell, he "died" like 50,000 times in the first game alone.
It takes a combined effort of Pirates, Ninjas, and Chuck Norris himself to even make Johnson take damage.

In halo 2 second mission on legendary he has a sniper and hides with you He won't die no matter how many times you shoot or hit so just hit him till he goes to fight :) Thats how me and my friend beated the second mission on lengendary in halo 2 :P
