I grew up in Lynn, Massachusetts.  

This trend earned Lynn the following taunts, the first half of which is well-known throughout New England to this day:

Lynn, Lynn, city of sin.
You never come out the way you went in.
Ask for water, they give you a gin...
it's the darndest city I ever been in.

Books about the history of Lynn, however, refer to this phrase being coined due to perhaps 100 bars and taverns lining Summer St. at a point in time.
And this merely a spinoff of it:
