I think the grid pattern works well with the background. I was going with an old, dirty brownish background and I think the grid's roughness adds to that.

1. Curly is more or less of a graphics genius. I'm not as good as him and I don't pretend to be. Even though I'm using an older style I do impliment new styles into it (even if its not evident in that signature). This was the first signature I've made in a few months anyways.
2. Right...Seeing as I was saged 3 years after I registered and had been making signatures since early 2004. I've made other variations on my signatures in the past anyways.

SYL, please refrain from flaming other users. You have no right to say his tags "suck". It's all a matter of opinion and you know that. I personally happen to like that SkulltullaX tag.
Sometimes, it's not all about the appearance, but what the tag does for someone.
For me, it brought back some awesome memories about a game I truly love. (The tag isn't bad either, I happen to think it's pretty rad)

1: although a bit more could be over the render, and the text could be removed, it looks good, got nice lighitng and flow.

this is far from my best work, but the main point is the time on the render. I just threw on text i liked ( added an outline too it ) and made a quick background from a brush and some blurring. No border yet but.....that is what cnc is for. THANK YOU

Lito: have one line behind, it'll add a lot, and make the text/lines near it smaller and fit more in with the colors, not bad though, you're improving a lot

1st: pretty empty on the sides. Red and green really doesn't go together
2nd: pretty chaotic, colors aren't that pretty. text is pretty odd and the whole focal is hard to find.

Yeah, the first one isn't quite done, and I'm definately not done with the colors. =P
second was a collab with my brother who doesn't really do gfx much, I'm surprised it even turned out that good, it was more or less "splatter all over everything". xD
Genius: Ok well you've defeintly just started and if its from oldest(top) to newest(bottom) you definetly are imrpoving. Ok well here is my advce on how to imrpove, you got a fairly decent background, and colors are not bad, try adding just one each time around, you'll be up to par in no time :D.
to add:
-lighting
-flow
-depth
-focal
for improvement:
-Don't have just big text, it take away from the sig itself, you can never go wrong with arial font
-The borders are too complex, if you want it to be contained use it with a 1px black border
-read tuts, and I don't mean this in the harsh way(text=no emotion known), but read them, gather a few you like and can understand and try and see what you can come up with.

Thanks for the advice, that was just the kind of thing I was looking for. Really, I could do most anything anyone else can with Photoshop. I just lack any kind of originality or ideas. I end up trying random things until something looks decent. I always totally run out of ideas less than half way through, and I never have a clue what I want something to look like. If I see it, I can probably make it. I just can't picture it.
I've been meaning to look into tutorials. I'll probably get around to it at some point. I'm completely self-taught. I have one issue with the whole thing, though. No offense, but it seems to me that every "professional" sig looks exactly the same. They all have that same style to them, they basically look like they were all done under the exact same teaching, which they likely were, and it's something I don't particularly care for. I'd prefer to stand out more.
Lighting is something I've been meaning to work on. It's one thing I can't seem to get right. I've been looking at other sigs for reference, but I haven't found any particularly good ones to pick the concept up from. Unfortunately, I don't even know what to do for the other things you mentioned. It's just not something I particularly understand how to do. I don't know what that involves. It's not something I've ever really tried to work on before.

Work on the text style a bit. Also lighting lighting!! :)

how the hell is it the same style? it seems like everything i freaking do has a downside. originally i needed a focal, depth and lighting, so i add it to different styles, and then they turn out 'the same style'. i'm thinking about taking a long break from gfx. tuts don't teach me anything, i already know how to do stuff, just for me, they don't ever work. c4ds, no. displace, already what i'm doing. smudging, already doing.
gimp is too limited, at least for me.

Kill the black dots. Only real negative thing.

concept wise- its good but its a bit too big, has too many focals and the background is meh. Don't let this dishearten you. Rather next time, use one focal, or one sprite, and see what that does

v2 is better, just start adding C4Ds in addition to brushes, and the results will be even better.
Pres_Evil:
Just an idea. Take the brackground, duplicate it, place it over the shell. Now, take the sparks brush, and erase the area where the shell is on the top background layer, having the back most part covered slightly, see what that does.
Koolman:
The render needs better depth and the background needs to be darker, however, I go like v2 and I love how you used the motion blur. The background is rather neat. Also remove your name from the sig.

border kills, looks like a wandbrush render cut. Text is really poor and takes away frm the focal. scanlines make things worse, not better. lacks light and depth. As for good, you got color and somewhat flow. It also belnds fairly well.

First off, I really like the colors. Excellent choices on your part. :P Also very good brushing, it has a very distinct style, and I like it. It's just fun to look at. The only things I really don't like is that the sig feels sort of empty, maybe too big. And that the render isn't really a good one and is too faded.
Otherwise it's a very good sig with gorgeous colors and brushing. Nicely done.

As some of you may know, I'm going through a sprite obsession. I tried some different things this time. Instead of bombing C4d's on there. I decided to add a little bit at a time, to a stock and sprite and see what comes out. C&C would be sweet.

Indeed. When I made the background, it frustrated me that I couldn't get very far without a ton of blackness. As for the text, I tried doing a green to black gradient, but I don't know what went wrong with that. Oh wait, now I remember, when I set the gradient overlay style, I forgot to set the gradient from transparent to black. Instead, it was white to black. And since I had the opacity lowered, you can still see a smidgen of green. I should fix that.

The background is just..really, really chaotic. I don't see any focal points, depth, lighting (Although the entire background is overly bright), or flow. And the large black blobs..I can see what you were going for on the edges, but in the center, on the render no less? Just doesn't look very good.

@mehhht, out of all five, third and fourth one id say are the best, third good lighting and effect, and fourth is overall a great tag, text is downed right, effects work nicely. On the others they are good but, the effect seem random in some places and messy.
The fourth. At least it LOOKS like it has some flow. And why did you forge all the lighting? Geez. They all lack depth, flow('Cept for the aforementioned one), and any..decent lighting. I also don't understand what would possibly compel you to use the gradient like you did, because having one side one color, and the other another looks really tacky.

Haha, thanks for the tips Atlas. The reason I use two gradients for colors is because when I don't everything seems to look monotone...at least that's what everyone tells me.
But I've only gotten good comments on the 3rd one about the color blending, you're the only one who thinks it sucks....

Try using some C4D effects without removing the color, maybe that'll help. Remember, Gradients for color is a n00b technique.

Sorry mehhht, but u can do better. Colors are well decent, but effects are messy, and text phails.
Yeah I know it was a quick (like 4 min I think) thing just to work on color, all I did was add C4Ds to see if the color was better....

Efeects go nicely, text is ok, lighting in some places seem random, but main concern everything seems of sharpened. Oh and stick to 2px black boarders.

I don't like some of the effects. I also don't like how your SN is between Kakashi and Hatake. I think it'd be better off by itself. Maybe on the top or bottom right?

Too messy, not Depth isn't great, and colors dont fit with the render., and tags dont always need text.
Uhhh...it was a stock and those were the colors in the stock...if they don't fit how should I change it? ???
I don't have a problem with the colors. I just don't like the text. I like this one a lot more than the other recent ones you posted.

I still don't like it, but it's a step up. I don't like the text over the face at all. And I think the face should be sharper and the BG more blurred.

The first one is cool, but sorta hard to see the render, try to make him more of a focal. GJ overall though.
Second one try to blend in the render better. It is a bit monotone also.

I'd like the link one a lot more if it didn't have that gigantic black spot on the left. I'm not too much of a fan of the text either. But I like the effects.
I'm not too much into Lee one. Out of the right, I like the text the most. But I think you should add something else to make it seem more "full" on the right. And I don't like the color. Perhaps a tad more green? :P

Very nice, although lighting is ok, but the text placement is horrable...Text shouldn't be part of the focal, but still noticeable.

Milotic is covered up way too much. I'm not diggin' the border on the left and bottom. And I don't like how the effects match up with the back. If it's isolated, I think the effect should be brighter and flashier. I also think it's too big as a whole. But it's start. I believe you can make something really nice out of that.

I don't really like either. Especially the 2nd one.
I think the symbol is covered up too much. And that faint blockiness at some parts doesn't really suit my liking.
I think more should be added to that Packers sig. I just don't like those arrows.

Yeah it was the end of the piano and I liked that image so much. Plus after an hour of work I just wanted to finish :P
I have always liked water effects. I don't know how to make them look good :( My only suggestion is to try and spread it through out the whole sig. The black part looks to dark and empty making the sig look unfinished. Also the lighting looks a bit cut too. Lighting wouldn't nomrally come for the bottom in a water sig so it seems out of place.

Yeah it was the end of the piano and I liked that image so much. Plus after an hour of work I just wanted to finish :P
I have always liked water effects. I don't know how to make them look good :( My only suggestion is to try and spread it through out the whole sig. The black part looks to dark and empty making the sig look unfinished. Also the lighting looks a bit cut too. Lighting wouldn't nomrally come for the bottom in a water sig so it seems out of place.

Purple does not belong with green(Link), it makes fugly, i mean when i think of green and purple, i think of vomit, no offence, get rid of the purple, or replace with a different color then it would be nice.

Well V2 is the best imo, though colors seem a bit too saturated on all of them and not a fan of that imo. Good flow could a use lil more depth, but its good overall.

Close but the color Variations look back, needs a bit more red on the left. Also could use more particles to give of a bit of spark feel to the fire. Nice though, like the concept :P

Colors, depth, lighting, and compo needs work.
Red and yellow don't look good. I see absolutely no lighting. Composition is a bit off. Effect could use some more work, add some smudging, vector's and or c4d's.

THe "b&w w/ focal point colored" style usually doesn't go so well. Don't try to do this, it usually just looks bad.
I dislike the border on the bottom.
The smudging is okay, but the sig has so little contrast. I feel that the light grey in the upper-left quadant of the sig should be white. The render looks like a floating head, and is facing away from the sig, which makes it look weird imo.

Anyways its very Low Quality, you need a better image. the text is too pixely, and your simplicity works in some ways, but tech imo does not work on this one, and its very monotone. All i can say is to work on depth(effects) and color.

B&W version is hawt, only thing that isn't is the Mehhht's under looking ahead, I'd replace that with a saying or something, its a bit of a throw-off.

Colors are off, Depth is horrible, and text is scary... Simple text would be better, Smudging and c4d's for depth would help, work on colors. Lighting and lending could also use some work.

Depth, colors, and lighting need a lot of work, try to incorporate some smudging, get so good lighting that doesn't look forced. Until you get better at text, I'd leave it out.

Horrible transition... It's light on one side and dark the other, so it's not so much it lacks depth but it's messed up. Video effect kills the whole thing. Text is well... not bad, but could be better.

First needs a lot of work, colors are too messed up and Ike's outer lines look messed up as well.

The transitions on the colors need work, it looks weird atm. Also depth lacks and composition is poor.

Abstract war V1 without text has good depth, but colors could be better imo.
Assassin Creed V3, Colors and depth are very nice but the white blob or w/e to the left is a turn off iimo.

Just thrown together real quick, a lot of duplication of layers, you can see Sonic had a G. Blur thrown on two of the dups, as well as different modes set to the layers. Made it a tad darker on the render side.....meh, just tell me what you think.

The lighting looks better with a nice Gradient Map, I can easily fix the lighting in other words. I know the depth isn't that great at all :/. I also know it isn't my best :x.

To be honest, it lacks good lighting, imo. It doesn't really seem to have great depth, it isn't bad, per se, but definitely not your best work. Love the blending.

Colors are better, but the face of Ike looks distorted because of the lighting. Text is no better,also depth is needs work... Incorporate more then just smudging.

I'm not sure in Gimp.
In PS you just make a new layer, brush around in it, then hide that layer. New layer, Image>Apply image. Right click that layer in the layers box and click Clipping Mask. Then unhide the brush layer and move the Apply Image layer until you get something you like.
GIMP is different, I think, Matt, or anyone, can you make it a little more applicable? Oh, thanks DL.

The next is poorly placed, and doesn't blend with the colour scheme. The sig is also too dark, and Samus doesn't seem to fit very well (you did a good job fitting the most of the image in the sig, but that very rarely looks good because now a majority of the sig is empty). The border is also not very good.
2 sigs recently made, haven't made any in a while.
