Title: Wii U Launch Games
Post by: Neerb on November 14, 2012, 08:41:18 PM
Another general thread. Because hey, it's not like we have too many active threads on this forum.

IGN just reviewed their first Wii U game today: Ninja Gaiden 3. They gave it a 7.6, which is more than twice the score of the PS3 and 360 versions (3.0) thanks to the super overhaul this special edition received. They said use the Pro controller for it instead of the GamePad, and they thought the graphics weren't quite as good as the other versions of the game.

So, the other versions get 3's while the new system launch version gets twice the score? Gee, I wonder if someone is fudging the numbers behind the scenes to try and boost launch day sales..... Yes, I'm a massive skeptic.

Although thanks to delays on a lot of games, I guess i"ll only be playing NintendoLand and Mario WiiU for a bit on this.

To be fair, Tecmo addressed many complaints with this new version. And I mean many complaints.

I've beaten both previous on the hardest difficulty(you can check my achievements if you want DarkZero EX is my gamertag), so I know Ninja Gaiden in and out. When I played 3 at a friends house I felt as though they forgot what made the games fun in the first place. All the critics are saying the Wii U version fixes hiccups, removes QTE's, removes the parts of the game where you're forced to slowly walk around one shotting enemies, and brought back some of the traits that made Ninja Gaiden fluid in the first place.

For me, the damage is already done and I probably won't get it until it's a bargain.

Two more reviews from IGN.

New Super Mario Bros. U gets a 9.1. They say it's amazing and breathes fresh life into the 2D landscape, creating the perfect Mario title for both core and casual.

Nintendo Land receives an 8.7. IGN says it's best-of-show for Wii U's launch (though not score-wise, given that Mario review), as it's deep enough to be lasting fun for both solo and multiplayer while fully displaying what the Game Pad is capable of. "Wii Sports has met its match."

Well, we all knew IGN was gonna salivate over Mario WiiU because they do that regardless of what Mario is in, but I'm glad they're saying it gives a real challenge actually tries to bring some freshness into the mix, something that was SERIOUSLY lacking in Wii and New 2.

And yeah, Nintendo Land looks way better than any of hte Sports titles as far as being a glorified tech demo goes.

I believe they or some other review site said NSMBWii was gonna be "Contra hard", so I dunno if I'd expect challenge.

Black and White 2 is better though, minus the poopty protagonist design.

"The New Super Mario Bros. series may have taken the beloved Nintendo franchise back to its 2D roots, but New Super Mario Bros. U reintroduces what made the original games so good in the first place. It proves that there's more to the formula than just impeccable platforming. There's a sense of wonder again, of exploration and discovery. I'm not quite prepared to say New Super Mario Bros. U fully recaptures the spark of Mario's 2D heyday, but it's an impressive step in the right direction." ~ Joystiq

Sounds good to me dude. HD Mario? Fuck.

So, it launches in less than six hours here. I have two reserved, because you can make a ton reselling them.

What games are everyone picking up? I'm thinking about Super Scribblenauts and Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed.

Batman and Darksiders 2 got good and decent reviews, respectively. Basically, there's no point in buying them if you don't have them already, but they come with all the DLC, so you might as well get these versions if you don't have the game and do happen to have a Wii U.

ZombiU is unfortunately 6-worthy, according to IGN. Several cool survival ideas are muddled by mediocre execution, such as the tedious melee combat.

So, the Wii U is OFFICIALLY OUT TODAY. Anyone have it? Got your own game reviews to offer?

Mona and I got it but we went straight to bed afterwards and didn't get around to getting it set up until around 6PM today. It takes hours to get going. Between the update and setting up netflix, etc, we haven't gotten to try out Nintendoland.

No I'm actually pretty irritated that its taking this long to get this going. We just popped in NintendoLand twenty minutes ago only to find out there was an update for that too.

Depends. I bought a Deluxe. Either Nintendo's new servers were stressed and that's why it took so long, or maybe its just a massive update. 5gigs.

IGN isn't the only review outlet to exist. Even if the game has been getting average reviews.

We'll probably have to make some sort of ID thread for the Wii U soon.

So Nintendo Land is super fun. I personally wish they made the Mii's clothes that they wear match your color. Like, in the Luigi's Mansion or Mario chase, your hat and shirt are your Mii's favorite color. The letter could either be the first letter of your name, or 1/2/3/4 (depending on what player you are), or L, M, W, Upside down L, but still match your color. Would have been cooler in my opinion. Another example would be for the Zelda Game, I WANNA BE RED LINK. But besides that pointless complaint, I've been having a blast so far.

NSMBU is also a lot of fun. For some reason, I'm loving the additional music that plays when you have a Baby Yoshi, their singing. But are they just... random power ups? Power Ups you have to keep and protect and limit yourself to use? When I first found that pink one, I thought I had to take it somewhere to eat something specific, but it doesn't seem that way. Not that I mind all that much, but I would like to know.

also I think the miiverse thing is pretty cool

Nintendo Land is a good showcase for the system, and the games are generally fun, with a few misses here and there. I'm glad I more or less got it "free" with the Deluxe pack, as this isn't worth a full  retail purchase, but should have been a pack in title from the get go. I may actually come back to this during lull periods in games just to pass some time though, so it's already doing far better than Wii Sports ever did.

Mario U, what the New Mario series SHOULD have been in the intercourse ing first place. While it's still a bit too samey, it at least has a few new ideas and bothers to have it's own level designs, rather than shamelessly rip off Mario 3 for the upteen-bajlillionth time. I'm not completely done with it yet, but I can say with certainty I'm liking this a lot more than any previous entry in the "new" franchise.

I too would love a new F-Zero game, and to be honest the WiiU seems like a good console to put it on with it's variety of control options and finally some horsepower to really push the system like the previous game did with the gamecube. Hopefully they'll listen.

"I am really pleased to hear Twitter's opinion, because since the first episode on SNES many games have been made but the series has little evolved. I thought people had grown weary of it. I'd like to say: Thank you very much and try to wait by playing Nintendo Land's F-Zero minigame. I am also very curious and I'd like to ask those people: Why F-Zero? What do you want that we haven't done before?"- Shigeru Miyamoto on F-Zero

Maybe you guys should have bought more copies of F-Zero GX, cause Miyamoto doesn't even know why you want a new F-Zero game. This is kind of funny, what with Mario games coming out every year...

"What do you want that we haven't done before"? Uh... Miyamoto, how about a combination of well done vehicle AND track creation that two entries had but never both at once. How about a full, great online mode with up to thirty plus racers at once? There are LOTS of things you could still do with F-Zero... sheesh.
