I'd say it was awesome, It's a good length and a good story, and I like the controls and such. I'm hoping there'll be a sequel.

The question, to me, isn't wether  Gears is a good game, but rather, if it can surpass Halo in a world where Halo is so popular.

I don't think it surpasses Halo 3, but probably a close second with games for the 360.
