Are they gonna make a 3D Mario that's like the old Mario games?

I mean, ever since SM64, the mainline titles have changed significantly.  For one thing, the goals of the game has switched from getting to the "end" of the level to doing various things to collect stars.  Also, I would argue that the art style of the games has become more serious.  I'd like to see more smiley faces on environmental objects. :(

I dunno... I kinda think that the Yoshi's Island spinoffs are truer to the Mario platforming franchise than the 3D Marios in style and in design.  And yes, I know Yoshi's Island is Super Mario World 2.  Maybe it's just me, but I'd like to see a true 2D Mario platformer on the Wii.  I enjoyed Super Mario Galaxy, but it's not the same.

i kinda like the geting stars thing better then geting to the end of the level.
and just cuz there is not smiley faces does not mean its that much more seruous

Isn't getting the star the SAME as getting to the end of the level?

no not really it's a little diffrent
like in super mario bros you did not have to do anything to make the flag appear you could just get to in
when geting a star you have to do something its allmost never just there

It is sometimes.

And you still had to do stuff to REACH the goal/star/shine, they're one and the same. They both end the level. And plus, you rarly can miss the star/shine. It appears after you complete the objective. Same as the goal.

Yeah, I mean, there are levels that are like the linear platforming translated into the 3D world.  SMG had a bunch of those, which was nice.  However, the parts where you have to go on star piece hunts to get to the next area, purple coin collecting, and racing gives variety to the game, but it's not the same really.

Traditionally, Mario platforming has simply been about getting to the exit, finding alternate exits, and finding secret areas and items, and not much more beyond that except you just have to stay alive.  And that last part is what made a lot of room for creative levels, even if the base structures were the same.

I don't really see the "old" Mario games working in 3D.
New super mario bros. :P
that just looked 3d you did not play in 3d
I thought thats what you meant, and it was 2.5d (3d character and objects, 2d backgrounds)

and super mario galaxy had some parts that might work like that! ;)
