Title: SATs
Post by: Dog Food on May 02, 2010, 07:43:24 AM
Took my SATs yesterday morning. I'm not used to only getting 25 minutes to write an essay. So, I didn't finish. I only got three paragraphs completed with two sentences of a conclusion I started to write when I heard there was only five minutes left. I probably failed that essay. Overall, I think I did good on the writing and reading portion (other than that darn essay). I did alright on the math. But I think I did horribly on my score. Only getting twenty minutes for each section was such a new concept that I didn't utilize my time well in the beginning. But I think I can improve when I take it again in October now that I know what it's all about.

Anyway, I don't think every school does SATs, just like not every school does CAPTs (at least I did amazing on those). So, talk about whatever test you have to take, your scores, or when you are taking them and everything else.

I've taken both the SAT (twice) and the ACT (once).

My Composite ACT score was 27.
I'm taking it again in June because I'm not satisfied with that score.

My highest SAT score:
Reading: 700
Math: 640
Writing: 630
I'll be taking the SAT again in the beginning of the year.

I'll be taking the SAT IIs (Subject Tests) in June as well.
I'll probably take US History, Spanish, and possibly one more?

I took the SAT yesterday too, I actually finished the essay with about 1 min left and I actually enjoyed writing my essay. Was yours on decisions too?

And I think I did pretty well on the test overall, at least on the math section. I probably answered too many of the English questions, but I managed to get through more questions this time than I did during the PSAT.

I also learned I don't know how to write a cursive "f" or any capital letters in cursive.

Yeah! And I enjoyed writing it, but I drew out my points for too long. I spent too much time describing "The Pursuit of Happyness" and how it was the perfect example of small decisions affection life in big ways.

I think I skipped too many Math questions, but for Writing/Reading there were only a couple I was unsure about. I still answered them all, though. ...I don't even know what happens if you don't answer them. I figured it's counted as wrong and you lose points, like the AP tests.

You get points for correct answers and lose 1/4 point for wrong answers and nothing happens if you skip a question

I took it for the third time yesterday and couldn't really tell how well I did. I wasn't prepared at all for the essay topic I got, and the stupid proctor didn't know how to read a clock so she gave us 20 minutes instead of 25 minutes for it. I tried to tell her but she wouldn't admit to it, so I wasted another 30 seconds to a minute trying to explain how to tell time. After that I was mad off from having to make a half-assed conclusion and bombed the first reading section, but thereafter I did pretty well. Kinda mad that they decided to make one of the math sections the "experimental" section this time around, since math is my strong suit.

Past two tests:

Reading: 600
Math: 690
Writing: 600

Reading: 570
Math: 690
Writing: 650

Hoping to get on this test:

Reading: 650
Math: 720+
Writing: 650+

Oh yeah, and I'm taking the SAT II subject tests next month. Math Level II and Physics. Should be interesting/fun/mind-numbing.

AAAAA my meta-prediction failed.

Math is my strong area, yet I didn't score all that high on mine.  I think I made a 660-ish.

I've officially signed up for two SAT II's: US History and Math Level 1.

I wanted to sign up for one more, but I wasn't sure which other one to take.
I wasn't sure if I'd be prepared enough for Literature (I'm in AP Lang now, so I don't know if the Lit test correlates with AP Lit).
I was also considering World History, but the downside to that is that I took AP World History last year, so I'd have to do a lot of reviewing.

I'm still considering signing up for a third and paying the late fee.
Does anyone have any experience with either of the two?

Signed up for the one in june. Hopefully I can get 700's in everything and then not have to take it again.

The USH SATII is a breeze if you've had APUS; it tends to test on quotes and people a lot, though. I took the Math IIC, but the Math I should be basic algebra/geometry; nothing from Algebra II or space iirc.

That's good to know about USH.

By any chance do you remember what Math II is on?

They like to test on the unused sects of geometry (logic, 3d space), algebraic/geometric series and sequences, trig functions, and algebraic functions. One of the rising areas of interest is stats, something I was unaware of until I took the test (intercourse  box and whiskers).

Last year April, I took my ACT and PSAE. On the ACT, I got a 30 and 31 on the English and Reading, a 24 on the Science, and a 19 on the Math (yeah, not my strong point. Hate Math wtih a passion). That gave me a 26 overall, and I'm happy with it. It's not worth taking all that mess over again just to make the Math score go up. I exceeded on the PSAE and then some. That one was ridiculously easy.
Title: Re: SATs
Post by: Level_9_Chao on May 10, 2010, 07:46:33 PM
Haha, PSAE (for non-Illinois dudes, the Prairie State Achievement Exam) is pretty darn easy. It's just a baseline standardized test, so if you can get the national average on the ACT (which is like... maybe 20, Jesus), you pass. It also gives you an ACT to take too.

I'm just glad to be done with all my standardized testing... Except AP Language on Wednesday. Then, screw everything.

Got a 32 on my ACT, don't remember the SAT because every college I applied to accepted my ACT score.

GRE (standardized test for graduate school) is essentially the same format as the SAT with significantly harder writing and verbal (if you get a 600 or so on GRE Verbal, you're around 85th percentile) but easier math; got a 690 Quant/610 Verbal and a 5.5/6 on Writing.

Did you study for it between the 2 tests? Although I took the SAT, a 2 week self-cram session brought my score up what would be about 3-4 points on the ACT scale.

I did so amazingly bad... I'm going to have to retake them in October.

Reading: 600
Math: 500
Writing: 570

I'm surprised I got an 8 on my essay, since I didn't even make it to the conclusion and I spent the last five minutes writing, "Sorry this is so short and I didn't even get to the conclusion. But time's almost up and I won't be able to finish. Well, have fun scoring SATs!"

I must suck at writing to get the same score as that =(

To be perfectly honest, you have lots of room for improvement.

How much it matters depends on the college; there are a (literal) handful of schools in the country (like the one I went to) that don't require the SAT/ACT anymore, but allow you to submit it if you think it's representative of what you know.

Other colleges still weight the tests pretty heavily, and if you were to apply to one of those schools, they probably wouldn't be too pleased at your results, especially writing. If you plan on going to a 4-year college, I'd grab a study guide and re-take it.

collegeboard is down now, but when I last checked I got a 2030 on the May 1st SAT (previous scores previously posted in this thread)

pretty sure this was the breakdown:

Reading - 610
Math - 760
Writing - 660

that math score is going to help me when applying for cal, hopefully
Title: Re: SATs
Post by: Keeta on May 25, 2010, 01:31:58 PM
You don't apply for calc, you just take it automatically if you're in advanced math in high school.

If you mean college, that still won't work. Colleges aren't going to give you a credit for Calc 1 just for answering entry-level Math B questions correctly. They give you the credits based on what you get on your AP exam in high school. Depending on the school, you'll need either a 3 (45%), 4 (60%), or 5 (75%, also this is considered a perfect score). The most difficult a college can ask from you is a 5 on the BC, but if you're going to a school like that, you should be able to easily.

...so yeah, dont waste your time lol

I took the SAT once so far and am taking it again on June 5. I might take the ACT once as well--just because. The critical reading and writing parts were a breeze, but I didn't do so well in math.

By the way, I didn't get my scores back yet.

I too didn't finish the essay, but think I did well on it. I don't like being given a set amount of time for things like that.

I also took the entire test without getting out of my seat--just because I could.

It really was a pain waking up early and wasting part of a Saturday though.

I wouldn't say it's very great, but everyone nearby says it's amazing. I had to take the test in an unairconditioned building D:

If you can eliminate even one answer choice, the advised action is to guess. The benefit of getting it right versus the penalty of getting it wrong breaks even if you have a 1/4 chance, and the former becomes even greater if more answers can be deducted. On most questions, there will be 3 herrings and 2 actuals, meaning that it would be a bit odd not to leave any question blank (except vocabulary, in which they will always have at least one no one has heard of).

I know, but it was mainly the vocabulary ones that I skipped most on--and probably the math ones that I was clueless about. I think it was something like that; I took the test a while ago.

CR: 690 (intercourse )
M: 740 (wtf this is my best subject here)
W: 780 (no idea how this happened)
2210 Combined. Retaking in october for 2300 hopefully.

Math 2: 800
Bio E: 800
Math 1: 760

But yeah, as important as SATs are, they're not more important than anything else. It's just 1/6th of the application. SAT scores won't get you into college by themselves,  but that isn't to say that you don't need to do well on them, at least relatively for the college you are applying to. If you're in the middle 50%, you've got a neutral for that 1/6th of your application. If you're above the middle 50%, you've got a slight positive boost, if you're below the middle 50%, you've got a slight negative boost.

They are, actually. My parents made me go to a "college night" at my school and the speaker there showed us what was most important to colleges in the application process. The speaker also showed us what rank the items were on a list from one to ten. I still have the list, but I can't get to it right now. However, I'll find it if you want because it tells the spot SAT scores was holding. My point is that "SAT scores" was in at least the top three, so it obviously beat some other things.

It usually goes:

Transcript (Classes and difficulty)
Grades (letter/number + rank)
Standardized Tests
Essays
Recs
ECs

but some schools change the order around, a good number weight them equally, some take out Standardized Testing, but SATs will never "make" your application. It can really only break it.

Of course, but the list was general. Also, you can replace "SAT scores" with standardized test scores; thank you for reminding/correcting me.

In any case, you've piqued my curiosity and I'll soon be looking for that list. I'll share it with you if it's anything good.

Though only similar to SATs, I got my ACT scores last night. All score numbers are on a 1-36 scale and percentiles are national unless otherwise indicated:
English: 25 (79%)
Reading: 28 (85%)
Science: 26 (89%)
Math: 35 (99%)
Essay: 6/12 (33%)
Composite/Overall: 29 (94% National or 97% State/Florida)

The ACT gives much less time than SAT; Math is the only section for which they give exactly one minute per question and all others give 30~50 seconds per question. The Science section includes 7 large passages each with an experiment's extended explanation and several related graphs and simple questions about the experiment but with only half an hour of time, so I didn't even touch the last two or so passages.

You're disappointed about a 690? My scores of 600/720/590 (1910) are somehow considered absolutely amazing by people at my school D:
I'm fairly sure the difference from 700~800 are usually only simple mistakes, which if true would explain your math and writing scores.

The ACT and SAT are significantly different tests and your score on one will not usually be a useful predictor on the other. People are usually good at one or the other. Having never taken the ACT or a mock version thereof myself, I cannot personally compare, but being familiar with the SAT, I've decided to just stick with that. While 690/740/780 are by no means bad scores, they are not high enough for me to get into the colleges I want to go to, therefore I will be retaking the SAT. I'm going to try and hit 800 on either math or writing (or both) and get 750 on reading. I'd like a combined score of 2300 or higher, but getting at least one perfect score on a section exponentially increases your chance of getting admitted to the most selective colleges. For example, Dartmouth's acceptance rate is approximately 12-13% overall, yet people who score 800 on Critical Reading have a whopping 38-39% chance of being accepted.

Oh right, this thing.

I got a 26 on my ACT. Now that I'm actually taking Algebra II this year, I expect to do better, getting at least a 28. Hoping to hit the 30's though.

Yep, CAPTs are exclusive to Connecticut. Not like I'm from there or anything. *cough*

And same thing for me. I didn't do that great, but I'm in the range (or beyond the range) for my top school, so I'm happy. And since it's a liberal arts school, math isn't that important.

Reading: 690
Writing: 610
Math: 540

May as well revive this thread now that I've been taking the standardized tests, and I know a few others who go to the site that are in my grade level area. I took both for the first time earlier this month.

SAT: 2100

Reading: 650
Math: 760
Writing: 690
Essay: 7

ACT Plus Writing:

Composite: 34

English: 35
Mathematics: 33
Reading: 34
Science: 32

Combined English/Writing: 34
Essay: 11 (out of 12)

Needless to say, I'll probably be sending my ACT scores to the colleges I apply to. I hate how that period of time when it's free to send scores is BEFORE you get your results.
