Also, cutting is often just a cry for attention, but not always, it's easy to tell, if they just cut, it's a cry for attention, if they cut deep and actually leave a scar, then no, it is matching their emotional pain with real pain, I have often felt like doing something like that, but I have enough self control to not do it, same with drugs and alcohol. Honestly my life sucks, almost anyone with my life would probably be a druggie, alcoholic, or emo.
