It saves right before you go to another town. That way if someone's internet goes down you only lose what happened while you were in the other person's town. Also Resetti doesn't jump all over your poop.

You lose quite a bit when you spend 4 hours in someone else's town and their internet goes out.

so if you do something significant you can press start and save without interrupting the connection
