Title: Playstation Vita Thread
Post by: Tupin on December 18, 2011, 01:01:08 PM
So, the Playstation Vita launched in Japan yesterday, and will come to the US on February 22nd. It sold over 700,000 units in one day, so I think it will do just as well as the PSP did in Japan.

Are you going to get one on launch day or are you going to wait? Personally, I'm probably going to wait. There are some games that interest me, but if it's anything like the PSP, the first version of the Vita will be huge compared to further revisions. That and the fact that the 3G version is $299 and uses AT&T. I wonder if the Wi-Fi version will do well at $249.

700k is the rumored shipment figure. We don't know how much it sold, but there's not a chance in hell that it sold that much in one day in Japan.

I'll probably never get one. It definitely looks better than PSP, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to spend ANOTHER $250 on a handheld just yet. I'm just not that in to Sony exclusives besides inFAMOUS, and I'll probably be able to borrow it from a friend in the event Kingdom Hearts comes out on it.

I probably won't get it. One handheld is enough.

I'll wait for Persona 4. Even if that's the only game I'll buy, I'll have no regrets.

Same I guess, except that I'm also waiting for those memory cards to drop in price. Sony leads to learn their intercourse ing lesson, they aren't Apple.

If KH comes out for it, even though I'm not a huge fan of the series, I'll be irritated. No PS3 KH but a Vita KH? god

That KH 3 is so coming to PS3, anyway.

I was thinking about it a few months ago. Probably going to wait it out a bit.

Oh and apparently 312k units have been sold over 2 days (http://www.famitsu.com/news/201112/20007379.html).

Good news. The Vita SD Cards aren't that expensive as originally envisioned.

Bad news. Sony is still stealing $10 dollars more than normal SD cards. (Lowest Vita SD card of 4GB is $19, for example). Also, it declined a talk about how there was a discount for downloadable stuff.

I'm having a hard time finding the right words for this. These are the numbers for last week, which was Vita's second week and the biggest shopping week of the year. (obviously Japan numbers)

3DS 482200
PSP 101121
Wii 91176
PS3 75943
Vita 72479
DSi LL 8,470
DSi 5,894
Xbox 360 4,245
PS2 1,582
DS Lite 32

This is very concerning... If things don't pick up, this will affect Japanese third-party support.

Makes me think the Vita is ironically going to repeat the first days of the 3DS even though it has a strong lineup already on sale.

That would be extremely optimistic.

3DS: 374k first week --> 209k second week
Vita: 321k first week --> 72k second week

This is as bad as things can get.

Vita+Games+Memory=holy intercourse  there goes my wallet

its really that simple. the device and games seem solid though. Once theres a Monster Hunter or a Kingdom Hearts on the Vita Japan will probably flip out and sales will surge. Happened to the PSP anyway.

It seems that Vita wins the battery life battle against 3DS. At least that's what I've been hearing.

I still think the Vita is a BIT too overpriced. But I'd pay $150-200 for one any day. But $250 is still rather high, when you're still putting money down on memory cards and poop. Unless I strike it rich, I'll be waiting for a price drop.

I'll probably snag one about mid-March unless it tanks. Games? Probably not many until summertime. I just hope my ps1 exclusives don't look like ps2 games do on my hdtv.

If you have retail discs, the handheld won't read them. The only way to achieve backward compatibility is by downloading the PSP games.

However, not all games are avaiable to download at launch, mind you. There's a huge list, though.

The service denies you the right to play PSP games that you already own

To be fair, that service only would have given a discount on the digital versions of those games, and any PSP games you already bought on PSN/SEN will work on Vita just fine.

All you've really done is further show that Sony really enjoys being japanese jews at the cost of their consumer base.

Well...

On the bright side, Sony might finally be about to learn that they have to take handheld development seriously if they want success.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-02-20-sony-confirms-call-of-duty-for-playstation-vita-this-autumn

QuoteLongsworth went on to commit Sony's top studios to Vita development. This included Naughty Dog, which isn't making Uncharted: Golden Abyss for Vita - Sony Bend is.

"We see this as a five to 10-year platform."
"Absolutely you will [see Naughty Dog on Vita]," confirmed Longsworth. "You'll see a number of games coming out from all of our studios."

well that's good news

The PSP's library is filled with half-assed games. Not like the DS's library isn't, but the quality ratio sure is higher for the DS's library.

Scratch that. ND flat-out denied Vita development.

Here's the link... but it's from a NeoGAF member. I know what you're thinking, but if a mod there says that he's legit, I'm not going to argue.

Is that good? I never have any idea what "good" sales are when it comes to video games.
Title: Re: Playstation Vita Thread

It took the 3DS more time to sell that much, however, I'm skeptical in regard to the future success of the Vita.

We all know it'll explode as soon as a Monster Hunter or Kingdom Hearts game comes out for it.

It's not bad. Unfortunately, it's tough to say exactly how the western launch did. ~590,000 of those are from Japan alone, but other Asian countries make it so that we can't just divide the other 610k between North America and Europe.

That said, 3DS's first week in the west totaled ~660k iirc.

Played it again today (at gamestop) and I'm almost sold on it. The only things keeping me back are the analog sticks (will probably get used to them eventually) and the lack of games (should be fixed in a few months).

The thing's so uncomfortable. I have to hold it awkwardly to avoid touching the pad on the back, and I feel like I'm going to break those weird little analog sticks.

Sony didn't give a US launch figure for Vita, but NeoGAF estimated it based on info they did give. If NeoGAF's calculations were even close, there's a reason why Sony didn't give a number.

On the bright side, new Vita games will be announced tomorrow.

So I finally got to play with one at a Target. It's a really cool device and is a lot more comfortable to hold than I initially thought it would be.

If I had the money and it had better games out for it, I'd probably get one.

That said, both Vita and 3DS are doing extremely poorly. Only PS3 and 360 sell well in the US now.

Because a bunch of people already bought them, and now both handhelds desperately need to keep pumping out games in order to attract the attention of people who still haven't bought it.

Neither system has really enough games to attract the people that haven't already bought 'em.
