Civilization 4.  Turn-based strategy game, the best rated and (at least one of the) best selling games of it's genre.  got some ridiculous high rating on all major ratings sites.

Civilization 4: Beyond the Sword (more units, technologies, civilizations, scenarios, added in mods).

Fall From Heaven 2 with the 0.30 patch.  It's a complete fantasy world with stories behind most of the leaders and civilizations, completely different units, gameplay styles, added in spells, summons, et cetera.  It's a completely free downloadable mod made by fans for fans.  You can play as Pirates (my personal fave), horselords, demons, angels, shades, a group of people seeking the armageddeon (which is an actual event that happens in-game as it progresses if you do not stop it, spawning hugely powerful barbarian monsters), two types of dwarves, wild men, either half of a fallen elven race, and many more.  It's almost, if not equally as widespread a game as Civ 4 by itself.

Oh, I forgot to mention.  You can play as evil clowns. :P
