Title: Metroid: Other M Official Discussion Topic
Post by: SkyMyl on August 04, 2010, 11:07:55 AM
SO YOU GUYS, METROID OTHER M IS COMING OUT THIS MONTH, AFTER A TWO MONTH DELAY

And personally, I'm stoked. I've heard that pointing the Wii Remote at the screen to go into First Person Mode hasn't been...well received (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Understatement), but we'll find out how it is when Other M actually comes out. And of course, there's the Metroid non-linearity staple. You know, is Other M truly going to be non-linear like the days of old? Or is it really going to be like Fusion?

Enough retarded questions. Vote, discuss, and anticipate Other M.

All right, an August 28th edit. Reviews are out, gameplay details were shared, a leaked version was played, and it seems that it basically isn't all it was hyped to be in the trailers. With that said, let's turn this into a discussion thread for those playing through the game in general, as it comes out in but a few days. Remember, spoilers. There are people who don't want the game spoiled (Me) for themselves.

Of course i'm buying it. I'm just not too excited about the First Person thing either. Don't you have to do that to scan stuff, which then leaves you totally defenseless?

If I could, I'd get it immediately when it's released, but unfortunately, at that time I won't have a Wii to play it on. Normally I mooch off my sisters' Wii but they're moving far away in a week or so. I'll have to wait at least a year to play it.

Yikes, Nintendo Power gave it an 8.5 for restricting controls, bad voice acting, and a really confusing story. Nintendo Power gave Corruption a perfect 10 and Hunters an 8.5 from what I remember, so it should be interesting to see what other people have to say about the game.

Look, I check reviews on games I'm not sure about. I already decided I was getting Other M a long while ago. My reasoning was this: Team Ninja doesn't make bad games, Nintendo doesn't allow bad games to be made when they are overseeing a project, and I've never played a bad Metroid game.

The only legitimate gripe I've seen so far is the camera is a little slow and/or doesn't show where you want it to all the time. BUT, with auto-aim, this shouldn't really be a problem and isn't.

This looked awesome from day one, I'm not letting someone else's expectations keep me from playing a game.

Oh wait, they're mostly positive.  X-Play led me astray.
Title: Re: Metroid: Other M
Post by: SkyMyl on August 27, 2010, 01:05:27 PM
Most of them are positive, but some of the complaints have me worried. Take GamesRadar's review (http://www.gamesradar.com/wii/metroid-other-m/review/metroid-other-m-super-review/a-2010082791244315085/g-20090602105555875007), for instance.
Quote from: The tl;dr of the reviewYou'll hate

 • Combat is not skill based and gets old fast
 • First and third-person viewpoints don't always gel
 • Gameplay and story drag for several hours

Just for you, Metacritic!

Other M divides its attention among too many viewpoints and gameplay styles to nail any one of them. Thankfully, the entire game soars so high in the closing moments that it ends up a must play for franchise followers.

Yeah from what I can tell it's a good game, but not nearly as good as the other metroid games. I still look forward to playing it when it comes out.

GamesRadar's review is probably my favorite. It tells you what's bad and what's good about it, and at the end I still really want to buy it, but now I know what to expect.

I hear people are now going apepoop over the changes. I hear talk that enemies don't drop health, but you have regenerating health? Custom apparently called Samus losing her badass, as well (http://nsfcd.com/area6/index.php?topic=1160.msg24382#msg24382).

Yeah, you recover health and missiles by concentrating really hard. The G4 review pretty much shows you all the things that people are complaining about, but it's a little too negative to take seriously.

The missiles I was aware of, and I think it...kind of works. It's not really that logical, when you apply some thought to the workings behind it, but I think health is pushing it a bit, semi-ironically.

Got my copy a little while ago. So far, the only real complaints I have are Samus's voice actress, the "sensemove" (dodging feature) activating the instant you press a direction when an attack is heading your way, and using the d-pad to move around. That last one is more of a gripe than it is a complaint, though.

Just beat it. I'm a little disappointed it ended so quickly, but that's really my fault for being determined to finish it before the internet could spoil everything for me.

Got to say that it was pretty darn good. I can see why it's getting hate, but it was fun while it lasted. On just how good of a Metroid experience it was, and whether it's a good Metroid game, I'm not fully sure yet. A bit too soon to say. But it was fun.
...but the story got to be a little too reminiscent of Resident Evil right at the end.
That's where I just got to too. That thing was crazy looking.

The thing I don't like about it is that when I see a 3D metroid world with all of those computer screens, I want to scan all of them to complete my log book. I don't have that problem with the 2D ones because Prime was never in 2D. It just seems like a shame to have all this wasted space when I just run right through the center of most rooms. It makes me feel like I'm rushing through when I'm really not.

I just 100%'d it, something that took forever to do in Zero Mission and something I haven't done in any other Metroid game. This kind of disappoints me that collecting the items was noticeably easier than other Metroid games.

If you just got out of your ship at the beginning of the game, you're supposed to look at a specific spot of interest to go on with the game. In this case, it's the Galactic Federation emblem on a ship in the same room.

This game has a pretty lame ending. I hate it when they try to make you feel sympathetic for villains in video games. This reminds me of Avatar, and that's not a good thing.

I think we can all agree that Anthony Higgs is one of the best parts of the game. I think we have a third Metroid rep for the next Smash Bros!

...which makes it odd that you're saying you can see what's left of Ridley and nightmare when I can't find them in the post-credits adventure.

If you want another plot hole, here it is. How does Adam's brain get uploaded to a computer as an AI program when he died by detaching Sector Zero off the Bottle Ship, which then exploded?
Who knows. It's been eight years and all Nintendo has done is get developers to make games that jump backwards in the timeline. And it's been six years since the last 2D, Metroidvania styled Metroid.

So how exactly did Ridley die?
I know he was killed by that giant Metroid, but why was he all skeletonised?
You know how when Metroids suck the life out of a creature, they crumble to dust upon touch?

That was the state Ridley was in.

Ah, yes. I remember that.
Thank you. I was just a little curious if it were some other way he was killed.
He looked like a statue, lol.

Now that I think about it, Ridley has died and revived a lot throughout the series.

they completely ruined samus and the story is gay as poop
they basically made her adam's sex slave and she can't do jack poop till he intercourse in lets her

and then you can even move in first person mode
also less exploration than fusion lolololo
