Alright, some of you guys who've payed attention to the three new leaked Pokémon have probably heard talk here and there about similarities between Diancie and Carbink. That intrigued me enough that I've decided to look into it, and I found some pretty shocking information.

Basically, what the signs point to is Diancie being eerily similar to what an evolution of Carbink would be. Now I know it's supposed to be some sort of legendary thing, but what if it's not? What if GameFreak isn't past adding evolutions to Pokemon that aren't meant to be revealed in-game? I'm not suggesting definitively that there is a relation between the two, but I thought I should point out some things and let you guys figure out for yourself.

1. We don't know for certain that Diancie is in fact "legendary".

Yeah, we know it exists, and it's unavailable, and those have been qualities for legendaries in the past, but Pokémon as a series is constantly breaking patterns. Can't say for sure that Diancie has no evolutionary relatives. There's just not enough information.

2. They're both genderless.

Assume Diancie's a legendary and that's no surprise. It's not too weird that either one of them is genderless... but if Carbink had a gender it would blow this myth out of the water. It doesn't.

3. Carbink's Japanese name is... "similar" to Diancie.

Melecie and Diancie. The last bit is the same. Yeah that's not really much AT ALL, but I felt like including it.

4. They both share the same typing and classification, which is unique to only them.

The fairy type is new, and no combination of it and another type is really "common" so far. I'm not saying that this should be "proof" of a relation (Mr. Mime and Gardevoir are both Psychic/Fairy) but it's interesting. When I first saw Diancie I was surprised that, of all the type combinations, they chose Rock/Fairy. The unique combinations of the other two new Pokémon, Water/Fire and Psychic/Ghost kind of make it seem like they're trying to do things they haven't done before here, but then we have a direct repeat going on with Diancie. It's only a tad suspicious to me.

They're also both exclusively classified as the "Jewel Pokémon" apparently. Also suspicious.

5. Diancie is proportionally larger than Carbink in both height and weight.

I had to double-check this one. For some reason I thought Carbink would be usually heavy like fellow small Rock-types. Aron, Geodude, Bonsly, Larvitar, you name it. They're all heavier than they look. Carbink is 1'00" and 12.6 pounds, while Diancie is 2.04" and 19.4 pounds. Most Pokémon tend to increase in both dimensions when evolving (there are several exceptions though) but the fact that Carbink is a lot lighter than I thought makes it harder to really disprove a relationship.

Also, proportionately, Diancie's lower half, the part of it that looks like Carbink, is roughly the same height as the latter. That's some wild speculation but whatever.

6. Diancie's base stats are eerily proportionate to a hypothetical Carbink evolution's.

There is no conclusion on Diancie's stats, but there is a picture of its level 100 stat page:

Given that, let's look at Diancie's approximate base stats, compared to those of Carbink:

Carbink: 50 / 50 / 150 / 50 / 150 / 50
Diancie: 60 / 75 / 175 / 70 / 175 / 50

Carbink's already-higher-than-normal defenses would be quick to shoot down the rumor of a relation to Diancie if it weren't for the fact that Diancie's defenses are equally absurd.

There's just a small problem in the fact that, checking those 175 defenses myself, they don't seem possible. Diancie seems to fall more into the range of its defenses being 150-160, but it's fairly clear that they're no LOWER than Carbink's 150s...and if they were, that would be a huge problem for the myth. But that's a weird stat distribution that very few Pokemon carry (think Shuckle, Registeel, etc.) so there's that.

EDIT: Diancie's base stats above are what someone else has speculated and now that I've taken time to look into them myself, they seem way off. I'm reading more like 50 / 110 / 150 / 110 / 150 / 60, which would put its BST at a weird 630, instead of 600 like most "small" legendaries have. I'm also assuming its IVs are poop, and they might not be. I don't think there's much we can really do on stats at this point.

7. Diancie's moves at level 100 look... oddly familiar.

This is the one that got me. Check back to that picture above there, you'll see Diancie's level 100 moveset. Moonblast, Diamond Storm, Light Screen, and Safeguard. Diamond Storm is quite obviously new and probably Diancie's signature move. But if you take that one out, the remaining three line up EXACTLY with the last three moves Carbink learns. In that order.

L46 - Power Gem
L49 - Stone Edge
L50 - Moonblast
L60 - Light Screen
L70 - Safeguard

Alright, that being said. I know there's absolutely no way to prove that Carbink evolves into Diancie by any method, and to speculate like that seems silly. But those are the facts so far, and it's up to you to make your judgment. Personally, I doubt they're related by evolution... but if there's no connection AT ALL, then I'm going to be a little bothered. There's nothing so far that can directly disprove a connection either. I was really skeptical of this myth at first, expecting that something like Carbink's weight, stats, or gender would instantly debunk it, but it turns out I was wrong. So, you never know.

Note: I realized when I was about finished with this post that there have been videos posted on this subject. Should have guessed. I admittedly haven't watched any yet, and I don't know whether or not they cover the same stuff I outlined. But who knows, I might have something they don't, and they might have something I don't.

I have yet to play X or Y, and I know nothing about anything about the game because I pretty much avoided spoilers.
Why the intercourse  did I read that post? For some reason I did.

@Kayo: They're probably related in some way. Let's just wait and see.

everything about them is similar. there is one of two things going on here.
1) they were originally related but gamefreak separated them for god knows what reason
2) they're related in a way we will eventually find out, possibly similar to manaphy/phione.

The Riddler

they're also probably related to the worst champion in pokemon history

I actually think it will be some new type of relation, unlike Phione/Manaphy or anything else we've seen, for that matter. Probably something that only shows up in in-game folklore or whatever and not via breeding or anything like that.

Because Diancie and Diantha share some letters in their name and nothing else

So does Dialga

Try a little harder.

You almost have a point when you look at the end of Diantha's coat... however it also bears just as much resemblance to Gardevoir, which is her signature Pokémon, so I don't think it's enough.

If Diantha's hairstyle matched Diancie's "pigtails", or if she had pink gems ANYWHERE in her outfit, even has a necklace, there might be something. But nope. There's just not enough.

Diancie has been officially revealed via Corocoro. Apparently she's a key part of the next movie, which comes out in Japan this summer.

#12
"Diancie is born from a Carbink that undergoes a mutation. It can instantly create diamonds by compressing the carbon in the air; these diamonds can then be used to defend itself. "

This is straight off the Bulbapedia page; they're incredibly anal about information being from a direct source so I'm sure this was probably translated right out of CoroCoro. I'll let you know the source once I find out myself. Edit: Take away the first sentence and that matches a leaked dex entry, so it's probably explained directly in the Pokédex.

Well there you have it.
