Recently, I started playing the Touhou Project series of shmups that I've known about for quite a while, thanks to remixes of the amazing music that are featured in viral Japanese animations and other videos (examples include "Marisa Stole the Precious Thing", "Overdrive", and "Ronald McDonald Insanity").  But playing some of them really helps me appreciate them even more.

Basically, they're the kind of shmup where enemies produce screen-filling curtains of projectiles, like this first boss from Perfect Cherry Blossom (Touhou 7)

And that's an easy one.

Has anybody else played them?  Which is your favorite?  I must say, Perfect Cherry Blossom is amazing.  I need to try out some of the other ones.

Oh, right, I forgot to mention...this isn't a normal shmup.  It is extremely character-driven and it has an anime-like plot.
"I lovat a gabber.  I could listen to maure and moravar again.  Regn onder river.  Flies do your float.  Thick is the life for mere." - James Joyce (Finnegans Wake, page 213)

Not really a fan of bullet hells except Ikaruga.
