The Xbox's origins and Microsoft's involvement in games didn't start in 2001. It started in 1983, with the Microsoft-developed standard of MSX. MSX was an attempt to standardize what was at the time a very nonstandardized industry. It was hugely successful in Japan, Europe, South America, and pretty much every corner of the world except for North America. Here's a video of Bill Gates talking about it during its UK introduction, and also included the doubts of Sir Clive Sinclair, founder of the company that made Britain's most successful computer:

This was a huge concept when the computer was first released, no one had ever tried to create a standard in which multiple companies that make different machines have the same software compatibility.

I'm going to get one of these I ordered a couple of days, a late MSX called the MSX2, made by Sony. Oh, and in case you were wondering, yes, Metal Gear originated on this system and yes, its a lot better than the NES/Famicom games.
