Title: Some random information about HG/SS
Post by: bluaki on January 09, 2010, 04:07:42 PM
Don't read any further in this thread if you actually care about spoilers in a remake game.

As a few of you might know already from me mentioning it repeatedly in chat, I got the Japanese SoulSilver game for Christmas. Been playing it pretty much every day.
Here are some details I believe are worth noting but haven't been mentioned often online:

Have any more questions about the game? Post and I'll answer =3
Of course, unless they're translation-related. No, I cannot say now whether his name will be Green or Blue nor whether Janine will keep her G/S name.

So no more decorating your room?

QuoteThe "Saving a ton of data, please wait forever" is removed so saving is usually faster.

Great, now I won't feel like I'm defusing a bomb when saving with low power.

Yup. Not a single decoration concept is kept, including those used for Secret Bases in Hoenn and Sinnoh games.

Actually, all of the DS Pokemon games keep a backup save file. No matter how badly a save session gets messed up, the game will automatically load the last successfully saved file.

Something I forgot to point out earlier is that many Kanto trainers own various Hoenn and Sinnoh pokemon.

Is the basement of the Goldenrod Dept store still there?  And can you walk out into the pen where the Pokemon are at the day care center?

The basement is there, with just the boxes that you can push to find items behind and the only way to get there is from Goldenrod Underground as before.
At the daycare, after walking inside the building with the old lady, you can see the pen to the right of the pathway. You cannot walk inside the pen.

How many floors were you able to go up and were there requirements to go upstairs?

Touch Screen use sounds great, PC sounds confusing. I like how following pokemon can appear shiny if they are shiny, it would be nice to have a brown Staraptor or a green Registeel walking aroung Kanto with me. Though seeing Sinnoh pokemon in post-nationaldex trainer parties kind of kills the point of a remake, but sounds very interesting.

I can't wait to get it! Has the actual US release date been released yet?

Yes, it'll be released on Pi Day (March 14)

Ah, good to have an actual date rather than that filler 3/20/10 or whatever they told us. So, 2 months. I think I can make it. :/

None of you all check Serebii?

And features seem cool.

(I've always known about the backup save. How else are you supposed to clone in D/P?)

Compared to D/P, not much. Overworld-wise, there are a couple really tall areas (Route 47, Whirl Islands) but most of the rest of the land is flat with occasional rock climb walls or waterfalls. Less rock climb than D/P. Sloped land is noticeable slightly in Route 4 just past Mt. Moon's exit. The very few cut scenes use 3D quite a bit (Intro, Lugia's appearance, riding Magnet Train). 3D models of the playable characters are visible on the top screen of bag view. The PokeCenter is more 3D than previously, with all of the usual 2nd floor features being moved behind the nurse above a ramp on the 1st floor.

Like in D/P, all overworld character sprites are 2D.

A trivial compatibility note, for Johto Pokeballs: Pokemon may not hold any of Kurt's Pokeballs, and thus they cannot be traded. Pokemon who were captured with the compe ball or any of kurt's balls and then traded to D/P/Pt have their captured ball marked as a normal pokeball by the game (because that's what it falls back to on an unrecognized ball ID) but the true captured ball mark is visible again either when traded back to HG/SS or even for the throwing animation in a link battle when viewed by HG/SS.

Hmm.. I was wondering that. So if a pokemon is holding one of Kurt's balls, you'll just get an error message saying it cannot be traded? Well, It's good that pokemon CAUGHT in one of Kurt's pokeballs can still be traded, that's one thing I was worried about.

No, they can't hold it in the first place.

The clicks and messages work like this:
1. "Pokemon" icon on bottom screen
2. Click any pokemon
3. Hold
4. Balls pocket
5. Heavy Ball
6. "This item cannot be held" (or however they decide to word that translation)

I believe Platinum treats its new items in a similar way.

How does the game measure time? Play time, or real time? I know you mentioned something about the berries and time...so yeah...

I was wrong, it's real time. I was just playing too much to be able to notice the difference between the two :x

Although berries grow based on elapsed time, Apricorns do appear to regrow exactly at midnight. I'm not entirely sure about this, but I remember picking an apricorn at like 21:00 and then coming back at 1:00 and seeing it regrown.

The female protagonist's U.S. name has been confirmed to be Lyra in both the games and anime.
