Flower, bulb, and leaf

In the Pikmin games, Pikmin move and attack faster depending on what is on their head. Flowers are faster than bulb which are faster than leaf. The leaf thing raises while they stay in the ground for a long time before being plucked and also jumps to flower if they drink nectar

From the pictures today, it's clear that it doesn't depend on the color.





Do you think the head is random, relies on how much time passes between each standard special move, or is affected by something else? Do you think the head affects the Pikmin's speed?
