Title: Most epic song ever?
Post by: metroidhunter777 on December 22, 2007, 01:39:15 PM
I'd have to say Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd, Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin, Eruption - Van Halen, Foreplay/Long Time - Boston, or Hotel California - Eagles.

Yeah.

Hotel California by the Eagles, We Will Rock You by Queen, or one none of you will ever say, the theme to Casino Royale, You Know My Name by Chris Cornell.  Easily the greatest song ever made.

Cornell's solo album, Carry On, was decent at best.  He needs to figure out what genre of music he wants to tackle.  Billie Jean, Scar on the Sky, Poison Eye, and Your Soul Today are all basically different genres.  I don't like that.  When he finds that rock is his poison, he will be fantastic.

^^^every Dragonforce song sounds the same imo

Anyways, here's what I consider the main elements of epic songs:
-Somewhat progressive
-Generally long
-Songs that you don't get bored with easily
-At the end you generally think 'Damn, that was awesome'
-Usually contain elements of a ballad
-Sometimes include piano or acoustic guitar

Here's some songs I consider FUCKIN' EPIK.
2112 (Rush)
Stranglehold (Ted Nugent)
Voodoo Child Slight Return (Jimi Hendrix)
Coma (Guns N' Roses)
Stairway To Heaven (Led Zeppelin)
Achilles Last Stand (Led Zeppelin)
One (Metallica)
Black Hole Sun (Soundgarden)
War Pigs (Black Sabbath)
Foreplay/Long Time (Boston)
The Number of the Beast (Iron Maiden)
One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer (George Thorogood)
White Room (Cream)
Sympathy For The Devil (Rolling Stones)
Brain Damage/Eclipse (Pink Floyd)
Hey Jude (The Beatles)
House of the Rising Sun (Geordie)
(^^Yeah, it's known for The Animals' version, but listen to Geordie's, it's much better)

And the two lists above were actually copied and pasted from another post of mine, on another forum. In a topic about epic songs.

you can't argue with any of these.  The first two are basically the definition of "epic", One Winged Angel...well...it's kinda like the first two but with awesome guitars and SEPHIROTH!, and Pompeii, along with everything else ES Posthumus made, wins majorly.

Considering that by musical standards, an "epic" song usually is rather long, amazingly famous, and changes regularly in dynamics while building up to a huge climax, "Stairway to Heaven" is basically still the standard. It's what started the whole format.

I'm not saying that's their best song (Ten Years Gone has that position, in my opinion), but still.

You don't seem to really care about music except for the ones you find in video games.

OWA is just a classical song with shredding guitars added. Yngwie Malmsteen has made lots of 'epic' sounding instrumentals on his guitar, like Black Star.
