I just started to play melee last night...

It had been a little while since I played, so I figured I'd try it.
And from that session, I learned one thing: I officially suck.
Not just bad, but really, really bad.
played against three level 5's. the four characters were:

pikachu (me - first 5)
Roy (me - second 5)
Zelda/sheik
Luigi

no teams, just standard free-for-all.
here's my stats:
10 games
won: 2
2nd: 5
3rd: 2
4th: 1

I suck... :'(

I recommend choosing a main and practicing the timing and range of your attacks.  Try single opponents first, then double, and then triple.

I love to recover from impossible recovery's with him...and if you know how to time down+B just right... >:D
