Does it leak like any other battery that's been left in something for too long? I noticed some white powdery material building up in the crack of my battery cover. It's only on the right side, so at first I thought it was just dirt. But as I was scraping it out with a toothpick I noticed it had this smell to it... I can't explain it.. Uh... Well, if you've ever been in a store that sells animal skins, it smells like that. Like animal skins full of chemicals.

It's working fine and all, but I wouldn't want to damage my DS by playing with a 3-year-old defective battery. Should I worry about it?

I would replace your DS battery.

You can buy them online at the official Nintendo Store.

if the batterie is leaking it would be leaking acid, right?

If the battery leaks , you would know:
1. When the battery leaks there will be liquid acid comming out of the DS.
2.  Your DS would most likly catch fire.
2a.  But I have heard that the DS battery is hard to catch on fire.

It's probably leaking. Batteries don't leak pure acid, they leak powdery stuff. If they do leak acid, the acid dries and forms more powdery stuff. Unscrew the panel and look at it, see if it's as bad as it seems.
