What does 1st/2nd/3rd party mean?  I have seen everyone talk about a a character, and describing them as a "1st party" or one of the others.  So, could someone explain to me how you classify the characters?

1st Party: Made completly by the company that makes the sytem (Mario, Link)
2nd Party: Made by the company that made the system and another company (Pikachu, Kirby)
3rd Party: Not made by the console maker at all (Snake, Sonic)
