Title: Rock Band 3
Post by: Eizweir on December 05, 2010, 08:27:39 PM
Rock Band 3 added a lot the series, here's my opinion on what's new.

Keyboards
Amazingly easy, it's Guitar without strumming and HOs/POs.  I 5 starred Bohemian Rhapsody on expert after using the keys for twenty minutes.  Pro Mode is a ninny though, amazingly hard to just pick up and learn.  That's probably the point, but I will learn the instrument.  I was highly dissapointed with the song selection when it came to keyboards.  Bohemian Rhapsody,Cold as Ice, Saturday Night's Alright for FIghting, and Free Bird are the only songs I find worth playing.  Where is Boston, Kansas, Journey, Styx and the rest?  No awesome power metal keytar?  What's the point if there's no good songs to use it with?

Pro Drums:
Pro Drums don't really add a whole lot the old system, the only difference now is that you're required to use the cymbals by way of placing a round cymbal symbol (pun not intended) instead of a brick coming down the screen.  It takes some getting used to at first but it doesn't take long.

Pro Guitar/Bass:
I haven't had the opportunity to play either because I can't quite afford the new peripherals.  But seeing as I play some real electric guitar it'll be interesting to see how it works.

No opinion on vocal harmonies, I haven't tried or seen them used.  I still need to buy a few more mics.

Anyways, what do you think of Rock Band 3?

A music game I'll play maybe once or twice, then stop.

One thing has always annoyed me about Rock Band, the singing. It's my favorite part, but I gotta sing like a retard so that I hit the notes right.

I've only tried the Expert Bass track, but I could barely finish it.
Then again, that was my first runthrough and I don't own the game yet.
On the other hand, Llama is a ninny.

It's not difficulty I'm concerned with it's the type of music.  It's just my opinion.

Several months later I finally got my hands on this game. (Wii version)
If only there was a way to torrent DLC songs... oh god there are so many.

I'll just end up picking up a 2000 pointcard and blowing it on like 10-15 songs. I love so many on this list it'll be hard to pick D:

Because I have always been a Nintendo fanboy

The games for it aren't games that grab my interest enough for me to go out and buy the console.

Well, I can understand that. But what I can't understand is how you're not interested in the several great FPS's, RPG's, music games, etc. for it. But then again, most of those are also on PC, so I guess I understand that too.

PC has Uncharted 1-3, Resistance, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Super Mario Galaxy, Paper Mario 1-3, Mario Kart, Rock Band 3, Alan Wake, Onimusha, Gears of War 1-3, every Halo, Twisted Metal, and more. Console gaming is useless and has no exclusives.

Rock Band 3 needs more Silverstein/Underoath/A Day to Remember.

They have 2 Silverstein songs, the new A Day To Remember album and I'm Made of Wax Larry and The Downfall of Us All. They have 3 underoath songs

Oh wait, you have the wii version, right. You can get the Underoath songs. The rest are 360/PS3 only. :(

The two Silverstein songs are... American Dream and Burning Hearts? Eh. If they had done Vices or something like that and I didn't have access to it, I'd be mad.

But Guitar Hero has I Am The Arsonist, so I'm content. Wish I could get more on Rock Band though.

As far as the Underoath songs go, yeah I got Desperate Times, Desperate Measures pretty much the day i got the game (hooray for being free) and I'll have to use some Points for the other two but that's okay.

That song... is amazing. It makes me wonder why I haven't listened to all of their albums yet.

But really, it's amazingly fun on drums and guitar. And probably bass too. idk about vocals though.

Love doing that song on vocals. I get 99% on Expert vocals. I really need to practice my screaming though D:

Underoath is one of my favorite bands though, hands down.

It's admittedly easy on guitar, but not in a bad way. Ridiculously fun nevertheless. It's definitely one of those songs that's decently difficult but can be played without much effort.

I really should get over my uneasy feelings about singing though and try it out sometime. I can only envision myself singing certain songs though. "Fascination Street" came to mind, but then I remembered that it's on GH: WoR. Maybe "Killing Moon" could take it's place...

I bet you're totally right on that song being fun. idk y I wasn't sure about vocals before (concerning this song); if it sounds awesome, it's probably fun, right?

On a side note, one thing I'd really like to see more of in Rock Band is black metal. I see that they have some Emperor I think, which is good, but aside from the songs that I have--one song each by Behemoth, Bornholm, and Dimmu Borgir--I don't see anything else. I guess I'll have to check again. Maybe they've wrongly listed it or something? Recommendations would be helpful.

On another side note, I've had the band The Pretty Reckless recreated as characters in my game for a while now, and thought I'd mention that I've just created the Survivors from Left 4 Dead. They look pretty good, but not as accurate as I would've liked, though it's technically not my fault. As for their main lineup, I'm thinking Bill or Zoey on guitar, Francis on Bass, and Louis on Drums. Not sure about vocals though. Anyone could be the singer I guess. Thoughts?

The only thing I have with the guitar is the ending. It's just a bit weird on my hands after a while. It is a fun song though, without being effortlessly easy. And yeah, it's fun. The vocals aren't hard for me, which is something because I have a pretty deep voice and my pitch range isn't great. But I can handle the clean vocals no problem. And if you get tired of screaming you can always just shout or even say the words in those parts. It's not as fun but it works.

Yup. That's the thing about "talkies." You can just... talk. It really is a shame since screamed, shrieked, yelled, and shouted vocals still have pitch. Too bad the games can't accommodate it.

And I know what you mean about the ending on guitar. It's the pinky I tell you! I do like how that's just about the only song in any music game that has that fretting pattern though.

Well you gotta remember that all people scream at different pitches. Some professional singers scream in pitches that are too high or too low for some people.

Also yeah, my pinky doesn't exactly love stretching back and forth like that. I think I'll practice a different fingering so my pinky stays on one button and I use my ring finger as well? My hands are decently large; I can probably manage that.
Title: Re: Rock Band 3
Post by: RX-78-2 on July 01, 2011, 01:55:30 AM
While people do scream at different pitches, the game does accommodate the fact that some people can't manage to exactly replicate the sound, so they accept a certain number of octaves higher or lower. The same goes for singing. What I mean is that harsh vocals should--in most cases--be treated the same way as clean vocals regarding pitch.

Also, I hate to break it to you, but from what I'm making of your proposed alternate fretting pattern, it's not going to work. Are you saying that your pinky will be held down on the orange fret? Because that would make the game recognize only that when you try to play the green notes (according to the highest fret rule). Honestly, I don't see any sort of alternate fretting pattern for this note chart. Good luck with it though.

I failed at explaining it, down to saying "ring finger" when I didn't mean that lol.

Index finger on Green, middle finger on red, pinky on orange. I think trying to hit both Red and Green with my index finger was causing strain on my pinky, being stretched so far out there. This way I have one fret per finger so this doesn't happen. By "alternate fretting" i mean fingering. There is no way to do this pattern while holding anything down, so the best i can do is try not to have to move my hand around so much.

Fretting, fingering, same difference. Although you must admit that fretting sounds a lot less sexual. =P

But now I understand what you mean. That would definitely work. I've done patterns like that for similar situations and it works like a charm.

On a side note, I've started requesting songs again on RB's official website. atm I'm only requesting songs by The Pretty Reckless, but I'll get to other bands eventually. For those interested, it's very easy (scroll to the bottom for the link), but know that once you request a song, you have to wait a few minutes to try to request another (or even the same one again if you want).
