What...the...s***!?

I was playing Classic mode with Fox (Hard, 5 lives.) and guess who I fought first! Link on Bridge of Eldin. After some time, I got the three Dragoon parts (After one kept falling through the gap in the bridge.), Link was caught in the bridge as it was reforming (He was on the edge), and I had a clear shot. EXPLAIN THIS NEXT PART TO ME.

Link rolled up the edge (I got that.), so I miss with the Dragoon, but instead of falling straight down to the stage, Fox was falling in the background, resulting in a KO (What...the...s***!?)! The portal was still there, I don't ever recall a mention of a backfire, and Fox was at 70 something damage. I don't get it.
