Looking purely at Japanese dates:
Ruby/Sapphire released: 2002
Firered/Leafgreen released: early 2004
Emerald released: late 2004 (8 months later)
Diamond/Pearl released: 2006
Platinum released: 2008

And then considering that announcement and release aren't the same thing, following that pattern, this is about the right time frame for the G/S remakes (well, swapping Platinum and the G/S remakes would suit the pattern closer, but whatever. Emerald was weird by coming out after Fr/Lg in the first place.)

Firered/Leafgreen were two years after their last major release, or less than a year before the next semi-major/third-version, yet that didn't majorly affect Nintendo's profits afaik.
