Maybe he's unlockable because he is powerful once more. Along with Kirby....
But why show Sonic over Ness?

Im pretty sure they are keeping unlockables a secret besides newcomers. Notice how Luigi or Jigglypuff havent been announced before sonic? well thats because they are unlockables and will never be announced  ;)

I can't find a link, but did that third-party characters would be unlockable. If so, than mayve he's updating unlockables but not how to unlock them.
