Title: What makes a game revolutionary?
Post by: Qsmash on November 24, 2007, 10:46:01 AM
I think a good story that takes you to another world and makes you forget your troubles in life. Gameplay and multiplayer modes are also very important to make a good game IMO.

That makes a good game -.- A revolutionary game is a fancy title for a game with plenty of innovation, which is a fancy word for "taking a chance in the development end". Most revolutionary games have relatively bad sales. Mario's gravity in SMG was revolutionary. Pac-man was revolutionary (First game with an avatar/personality). GTA's 1 and 3 were revolutionary (Play it, then play III. Huge differences). The Wii is filled with Revolutionary games below the surface. It just takes wading through the mini-game packs to see 'em.

Exactly. Like Phantom said, some revolutionary games are vastly overlooked in sales. One great example of this is Psychonauts. You venture into the minds of crazy people at a summer camp, and it was a really great game, but it flopped tremendously in sales.

When a revolutionary game comes out, the console company either ignores it and advertises shovelware to death or advertises the game to no avail.

So what you saying is that a revolutionary game is a game that changes graduatly from previous games and that they overlooked and don't get enough advertisment, and because of that they don't get enough money because nobody will buy it or know about it?

Ehh, I'd say that for a game to be revolutionary, it has to introduce new concepts, or at least vastly expand on current ideas.  (see Roller Coaster Tycoon)

That said, games can also be revolutionary in other ways, like making a genre open to a wider audicence (see the Halo series).

or just from making a genre more widely known (Splinter Cell).

In MY opinion, Serious Sam is Legandary!

It's almost like NOBODY knows about this game, yet, some random site (I think gamefaqs) gave it an ASTOUNDING 9.1!

It all depends on advertising. How advertised was Serious Sam?

Almost not at all.

Of course, I try advertising as much as I can!

Whoa. I thought it was a GCN game and the Xbox version had no Live functionality.

It's not and it doesn't.

I think it was created BEFORE X-Box live!
