Star power + fast fingers + constant strum=win

After I figured out Mosh 1, the flood killed me a few times, but nearly as much as mosh 1

Same here. Mosh 1 took me about 100 tries to get down without Star Power (I had only gotten Star Power a few times, and the three times I beat Mosh 1 weren't any of them.).
