Um... duh?

That's a VERY well known fact that was like a surprise because of the slot-loading discs.

Yes you can.  Also there is a way that you can play with your gamecube controllers on the Wii.  There are 4 controller ports that can be accessed with the Gamecube controllers somewhere on one of the sides of the Wii (I don't remember where exactly) but yes it's possible.  My copy of Super Smash Bros Melee doesn't seem to be working on my Wii.  I guess it must want to wait for SSBB.
