How do I catch the penguin in the first mission of the ice/fire galaxy? (names slipped my mind ATM)

Freezeflame Galaxy. If you Star Spin on the ice, you will skate. Follow the penguin and eventually you will catch up. Careful of the rolling rocks.

Keep spinning while skating for speed boosts.
