Title: The Legend of Zelda: The Binder
Post by: Halfthefun on September 28, 2007, 02:10:09 PM
I started this in Nsider, and I wrote up to chapter 17. Before I post each chapter, I am going to edit them, but I hope you like the Prologue so far. (Any criticism will be greatly appreciated, or if you dont want to, maybe say which parts you like best, why, since 'that was great' does not help me much)

Prologue

Din, Nayru and Farore watched the people far below, with a deep sympathy. None of the Hylians knew the prophecy that lay in store for them. But the goddesses could not interfere, that could destroy everything, ruin the planning they had worked on. The unhappiness had affected them, and shown in there work.

Mountains had weakened, crumbled, and fallen into piles of boulders and rocks. Even Din's hills and slopes were now hazardous to humans.

People were dropping like flies, with no reason. Babies were being born with unusual disnormalities. Plants were growing hysterically, or undernourished. Farore was unfocused.

Hatred, jealousy, envy, were only a few of the moods and hysteria that had enveloped many households. Thieves and murderers were roaming the streets, and committing terrible crimes, without fair punishment. Nayru's concentration was elsewhere.

As they watched over Hyrule, there attention was directed away from the market, a rock had disrupted the pond. An evil presence lurked in the Temple of Time, heading for the source of purity and peace in Hyrule. The goddesses tensed. Every passing moment seemed like an hour, each of them wished that they would not be chosen. The footsteps travelled in waves of evil.

A blood-curdling scream pierced the air, Din collapsed. As if in a spasm attack, she wriggled, her movements uncontrollable, her eyes wide in fear. She still uttered an occasional, faint shriek, but interrupted herself, her body quivering, adrenaline pumping, fear mounting up, ready to explode. Nayru and Farore could do nothing, their tears of light pouring down as they watched their sister being tortured. Eventually, Din stopped, and lay as still as a statue. The worst was over. Her body faded away until she was only a mere voice.

"Goooodbyee," She breathed. There was an awkward silence, as nobody moved.

A gale crashed down, hurtling wilted leaves in it's wake, blowing petals of flowers around. Grass blades waved frantically on the gentle slopes. Rushing up through boughs and branches, past the arid, wooden, window frame, the wind came to a halt by the young boy's head. With a final jolt, it rustled the strands of blond hair, and fused it's power with his.

A beam of sunlight emerged through the puffy cotton wool clumps, and shone straight through the window, landing on the baby princess's forehead. The child awoke, took in each of the faces, and stared at it's tiny fist. Opening and closing her fingers, learning and taking in each it's first sight. The adults all gathered around, and held their breath in awe. Projected onto the babe's head, was the Triforce. The wisdom triangle glowed brightly, before the picture disappeared. Most eyes darted up to the stain glass window above.

A vial of pure white, rose up, shaking violently. In a final burst, three colours flew out. Crimson, sky-blue, and jade. Weaving and interlocking within each other, they made an intricate Celtic pattern, winding in and out, faster and faster, until just a blur of white light. In a final sparkle, it spiralled down to Earth.

Swirling and gliding, a shimmering snowflake landed on the baby's head. It opened it's eyes, and stared at the blanket of snow it lay upon. Giving a little scream, it soon gave up. Nobody heard, or at least, nobody moved. An hour passed, and still the baby lay there. Enveloped in snow, it was too cold to even cry. But it was not dead. The Sheikah realised this and scooped up the baby, ready to bring it to his clan. The babe looked up, and fell asleep in the kidnapper's arms.

Hope you liked it, and carry on reading!

So nobody has read this :(

I have the next 6 chapter edited and ready to post, but I would first like to know that somebody is reading this, and I'm not just posting in a dead thread.

That was wonderful . . . EXCEPT for that part with the "dropping like flies". you're trying to get a tense picture here, am i corrrect? That just sounded a little . . . comic. Not to be critical or mean, I thought everything else was good.

Definitely one of the better fics here. Unfortunately, most of the people here look for horribly written fics that are only funny (to me, slightly funny or not at all). I hate to see great work like this and Your Memories are Not Enough go unnoticed. I say you should continue.

Thank you for replying, and don't worry about being critical, if I know how to improve, the story gets better (I hope :P) Now that I think about it, 'dropping like flies' is comical, I remember reading that phrase in a comedy book.

As long as I have a reder or two, I will carry on writing. Should I PM you two when I have a new chapter up? Well, here is chapter 1:

Chapter one

Link carefully placed what had once belonged to him, something that had been almost vital for his quest to defeat his mission. He let out a quiet sigh. Link did want to have a normal childhood, but, despite what Zelda said, he didn't want to forget and leave, Ganondorf was locked away in the realm now. Zelda heard his sigh but ignored it. Link, the Hero of Time, the Bearer of the Triforce of Courage, deserved to have lived like a normal child... But was he? Zelda delicately held the Ocarina of Time to her lips and blew, but the melancholy noted died away when Kichea entered the room, panting for breath, before collapsing on the floor in a clumsy bow. Link and Zelda took an arm each as they helped her to her feet.

"S-S-Sorry..." She whispered in between gasps of breath. She knew she shouldn't have ran, but the message was incredibly important, a moment later and she could be too late. Her chest pains strengthened whenever she had to sprint, so she avoided it as much as possible. She had always felt them for as long as she could remember. Once she had her breathing under control again, she told Link and Zelda the message. "The medallions that Link collected, the ones that were used to keep Ganondorf sealed in the realm, are...They have...Disappeared," She finished off. Link cursed Ganondorf under his breath.

"Well, we think Ganondorf used up his last bit of power and the medallions followed him in to the realm, now it has been sealed from the inside," she explained getting ready to vanish as quickly as possible in case someone's temper got the better of them. But they only started murmuring to each other, Kichea took this as her cue to leave. As she slipped out of the room Zelda called for her to come back in.

"This has caused a problem that we must solve," she spoke slowly, choosing the right words so that there would not be a panic. "And as you know, Link was supposed to leave," Zelda finally finished. Kichea slowly nodded, she personally had a friendly grudge against Link, and to her, everyone liked Link. But she chased the memory away with what was supposed to happen next. She felt annoyed.  Why was she the messenger? Kichea wanted to go and drop in to see her old friend, Malon.

"Tell everyone that I will be busy with plans, but do not explain, it is private," Zelda said, gesturing for Kichea to leave.

"Why do I have to do it? I'm not a servant, and if I hadn't been kind enough to go, risk getting an asthma attack so that I could tell Zelda and Link, then they still wouldn't know what had just happened. But do they thank me? No, no, no, why would they bother thanking me?" Grumbled Kichea as she dragged her feet towards the Grand Hall so someone could make the announcement. She then halted as she had second thoughts. "Well, they are pretty busy, but if I hadn't come when I did then Link wouldn't be here." Link wouldn't be here...

Kichea mounted her chestnut coloured horse, Kasztan, and rode out towards Lon Lon Ranch. The sky was paper covered in dry ink and shimmering glitter flung over the top. The moon was a chalky white, blurred by clouds that had a ghostly outlining on one side. But Kichea did not admire the moon or the stars, and suddenly shot up when she realised she had forgotten what day it was. She relaxed and slumped on the saddle again when she remembered. Today was Monday.

Here's chapter 2:

Chapter 2

"Kichea?" Asked Link, carefully directing Epona towards Lon Lon Ranch.

"Here," she replied softly, gazing at the stars twinkle as if they know something you don't. She leaned against Kasztan who whinnied softly when Link guided Epona towards them. Kichea was exhausted, Link was glad to see, so there hopefully would be no arguments as Kichea was strong-minded. "The ranch work is hard, feed the cuccos, groom the horses, clean the stables, collect the eggs, milk the cows, how in Hyrule does Malon do-" Kichea let out a big yawn, "-it?" Link stepped closer and stared at the stars too. As he relaxed Kichea pounced on him.

"Thought I'd forget did you? Well, don't think I would be ushered out of the room because little miss Zelda points at the door, and just 'forget about it'. I'm not a servant and if I didn't come when I did you'd be a child again," She said furiously as she jabbed Link. Then she broke out into laughter when she saw Link's face of pure terror. "Oh, your face just then, if I had a picture of that I could sell it for a million rupees. Oh, you should have seen the look on your face." Kichea doubled over in laughter, her skirt got caught on her head as she lifted it up and ended up ripping the cotton. "Oh, Nayru..." She blushed a shade of sunset pink. This caused Link to start sn_ggering before Kichea joined in again. After a few moments they calmed down and decided to talk properly.

"Remember that time when I shot your leg?" Link asked innocently.

"Yeah, and then you yelled at me too," she giggled. "But it all began when you had just left the Chamber of Sages."

Link stepped out on to the cobbles of the market square. A cloud of darkness swirled round the top of Death Mountain. Link gingerly looked to his left and saw a redead. The groaning of the monsters were growing as they spotted a new victim. Link knew what would happen next. He could either lunge at his opponent, be petrified and get eaten or he could step back so he might snap out of it before any zombie came in range of jumping distance. Link stepped back. A scream rang through the streets and rooftops as Link stood rooted to the spot, staring at the redeads. An arrow whistled through the air and hit the creature in the back of the head. The corpse slumped on to the cobbles and a puddle of black blood oozed out of it. Two more fell down before Link was able to move around again. He quickly killed the rest with a series of slashes and lunges, until the threat was gone. When he looked up at the rooftop where the arrows had come from he saw nothing- only a tile fall in the wind. He examined the weapon and saw a a piece of ripped blue silk. As he wondered further down an alleyway he saw some arrows take form of the name The Midnight Archer and attached to them was some muddy blue cloth. Link headed towards Kokiri forest, to him a special place where he grew up, and worried at what had become of it. If there were zombies in Hyrule Market, what would be in the forest?

The bridge creaked as the wind pushed it and lifted up each board in turn. Link carefully moved across it, he did not want to slip on the moss that indicated that nobody had been on this bridge in ages. He stared at the village, deku babas and scrubs wanted to finish him off quickly, trees were covered in vines that seemed so old it would fall at a single touch. Link turned right between two houses, heading towards the Lost Woods. Another arrow cut through the air and he felt it touch his leg, but not hit it. Instincts kicked in. Link swivelled towards his opponent and attacked with the same weapon his victim did. He saw a blue cloaked figure gasp in shock as the arrow pierced the skin and a puddle of scarlet liquid stained the grass. A breeze pushed the hood back revealing a pretty face and the most shocking feature was the emerald green eyes and the chocolate brown hair that swirled in wavy locks around her face. But the eyes only showed pain as the person crumpled up and fell unconscious by the pile of blood.

Link ran and cleaned the leg very carefully. He had hit just above the knee. After it had been bandaged he wondered what he should do. He could not leave her, nor could he take her with him. So he shook her awake. She looked up into two sapphires before wincing in pain.

"I want to come with you," she had said stubbornly. But Link had disagreed. They kept going back and forth until Link shouted at her.

"NO, LOOK AT YOUR LEG, YOU ARE NOT COMING WITH ME!" he had shouted. A sobbing could just be heard over the wind. Link looked at the arrow that had nearly hit him and saw a deku scrub's bullet caught on it. "She had helped me," Link thought, "And I just shouted at her. But she should have warned me somehow." Link looked back at where the body had been lying. The wind blew now, the only reminder was the red grass. But Link headed towards the Forest Temple to awaken the Forest Sage, Saria.

Kichea picked up her skirt just above her knee. That scar was three and a half years old now. But she sleepily said goodbye to Link and lead Kasztan to her stable as she collapsed in her bed and felt a wave of tiredness wash over her.

Hope you enjoyed it :)

Thanks you. I felt like posting chapter 3, so here it is:

Chapter 3

Link passed many servants scurrying around, sending errands or just cleaning the corridors of the castle. The great oak door of the library creaked open as Link stood peeking over Zelda's shoulder at the parchment laid out in front of her.

"Nothing... Not in this book," Zelda slammed it angrily. Link could see bags under Zelda's eyes, but decided not to judge these things too quickly with women. "Did you sort out the fight with Kichea yet?"

"Of course, you know we always have our arguments... She is a strong-minded one, I'm just getting used to her nature..." Link replied embarrassed slightly. "How did you know that we had an argument?"

Zelda turned her head and gave Link an odd look. "Kichea and me are friends too. Let's just finish these plans, then perhaps I can have good rest tonight," Zelda hurriedly replied before searching through the shelves for the hundredth time that day. They worked in silence. Servants came in bringing food and drink, and collecting the dry morsels that had barely been touched from earlier that day. A maid lit each torch in turn, creating silhouettes that danced and flickered on the stone walls. The orange sparks glowed enough for them to see Zelda's spindly handwriting.

Link finally stood up and said that he would bring Kichea tomorrow, she may know something they didn't, as they both realised and admitted they knew nothing about her childhood.

#*#*#*

Kichea groomed Kasztan's mane in a steady rhythm, while Malon brushed another horse.

"Malon, I...I'm scared. I feel that Ganondorf is plotting something, and that I have an important role in keeping him locked up. And my... Nightmares have started again. The nightmares of that night when I was five. Is this connected in some way, what am I supposed to do? I'm so confused Malon," Kichea complained.

"Kichea, things will turn out, they always do. Maybe you should take the day off, you have brushed the same strand of hair ninety times, you're not focused like you normally are," comforted Malon. Kichea simply nodded, but would the extra time make everything worse? She did not complain as she mounted Kasztan and galloped out of Lon Lon Ranch.

Kichea took the rest of the day off with a ride in Hyrule field, her mind deep in thought. The grass and dirt smelt wet, as Kasztan galloped off towards Lake Hylia. The ripples of the pebble's crash into the side of the lake just faded in to nothing. Kichea dismounted and stood by some bushes. A wind blew through a plant with a bell-shaped flower. A tinkle sounded through the air as it lulled Kichea towards the source. Picking up the flower, she rattled it gently. No sound emerged. Kichea shook it more violently, but the only noises were Kasztan's hooves and the wind scattering leaves. Kichea looked to make sure nobody was watching before she imagined the wind. The tinkling started again as Kichea blew through the plant. She felt dizzy from the ringing and fell backwards... Down... Down... Where was the ground?

Kichea was worried, she was still dropping, had she fallen into a never-ending abyss?  She eventually landed... Where? A twig painfully poked her back and rotting leaves blew in to her face. Kichea carefully looked down and saw no floor. She had an uneasy feeling, nausea took control. Had she been transported in to a different world?

Hope you enjoyed reading it ;)

Thanks, I have chapter 4 right here:

Chapter 4

It was getting late when Malon rode towards the castle, anxiousness showing on her unnaturally pale face. The hooves on cobbles clashed as Malon reached the door of the castle, its great towers looming high above her head. The guard standing outside stopped Malon. He was bored, but over- enthusiastic to be able to have something to do.

"HALT, what business do you have with the king?" He boomed.

"I must see Princess Zelda and Link," she replied. The guard whispered to his companion who disappeared into the depths of the castle. Malon shifted impatiently on the saddle, no position of sitting comfortable enough for her at this time. The night was black as the moon was completely enveloped by the darkness, clouds blotting out even the stars. Link and Zelda both raced to her, confused as to why Malon needed them so desperately. "Kichea is gone. I gave her the day off and she hasn't come back yet. Kasztan is standing by Lake Hylia, but...nobody is there. Please, help me find her," Malon pleaded, already turning her horse around, ready to shoot off into the distant.

Three riders departed the town and galloped towards the lake, reflecting the sparkles of the night, distorting their shapes in ripples that interrupted the entire lake, everything else lay still and asleep. Silence penetrated the air as the only sound was the horses hooves and the quiet murmurs. Drizzle descended on to the silhouettes. Shadows slipped past each other, still unaware of where they're friend had vanished to.

#*#*#*

Kichea tried to focus on the blurry object that appeared to be summoning the wind as the gale crashed into itself. She saw the ghostly complexion of a bird. Its shiny blood-red head turned into a peach-coloured neck, a sunflower-yellow chest and jade-green lower torso. It's shoulders mixed in from lime to forest which then lead in to turquoise, to royal blue, and to an amethyst purple wing tip. Its body was long and slender like a peacock's, its beak curved slightly in a dull white, it's eyes were a beady black, overflowing with intelligence and wisdom. It's tail feathers snaked upwards, like a phoenix's. The tail feathers were like its owner's body, from red all the way to purple. But everything was still fuzzy and misty. As Kichea marvelled in its beauty, she was shocked, again, when it spoke to her.

"Oooo, Bindeeeerrrr... My spiiiriiiiit... Has beeeeen... Broookeeen. Pleeeaaase... Gooo and fiiiiind... Theee oootheeer oooppooosiiiitessss," it whispered gently. The voice was cracked, but still held an air of courtesy in it. Then it plucked one of its tail feathers and handed it to Kichea. "Flyyy throoouuugh thiiiisss... Aaand III shaaall tryyy... Tooo aaansweeerrr... yooouuurrr queeestiooon... Yoouu haavee thee... Poooweeerrr oooff theee wiiind... IIImaaagiinne yooouurrseeelllff... Wiithooouut poooweeerrrsss... Aaannd peeoopllee wiiill nooot knooow..." The soul of the bird faded away. Kichea was left thinking, and realised that the bird had used telepathy, there was no other way, as it could not talk out loud without a tongue and mouth. But she got interrupted when a huge wind shook the tree and Kichea plummeted in a swirl of blue skies, green leaves and brown bark.

Link parted the bushes and found Kichea asleep, nestled in a warm, soft bush, and a wind grew around Lake Hylia. Ripples turned in to waves crashing on the grass, as the horses were mounted. Everyone left to go to Lon Lon Ranch. Everyone had something to ask, but Kichea was just tired and confused, so everyone let her sleep. They could always find out later in the morning.

Hope you enjoyed it! :)

Thnak you, and sorry I haven't posted a new chapter in a while... Here's chapter 5:

Chapter 5

Kichea, Link and Zelda sat at one of the long oak tables in the library. They were very tired after last night, but Kichea still told them about what happened. The ghost-bird and it's words. Zelda's face was expressionless, but Link looked doubtful.

"How do you know that it wasn't a dream? I found you asleep in the bushes," Link asked suspiciously. Kichea herself wasn't entirely sure, but she did have some evidence, the only thing that made her believe herself.

"Because..." Kichea said slowly, so everyone went quiet. She took out a little silver purse, made of a metallic velvet material. "I still have the feather. When you left and Malon went to bed, I couldn't sleep, so I rode to Kakariko village. The feather was only a ghost, so I could not hold it. It passed through every solid I tried-and nearly went through the ground. I noticed that the wind kept it up. And... And... I never told you two, but I can control the wind." She finished. Zelda was very surprised, but Link nearly started laughing.

"Kichea, don't be silly, not a soul on this Earth can do anything of the sort, and if it was possible, then it would have to be someone who has powers from the goddesses, like Zelda and I," Link said disbelievingly. Inside, Kichea felt like laughing, once she proved it she would love to see the look on Link's face. She quickly pocketed the purse and spoke again.

"Link, remember when you shot my leg? When you turned around I was gone and the wind was blowing. Or when you left the Temple of Time? I was the one who shot those redeads, and then you heard a gale. All that was me. And I can prove it right now," Kichea announced, standing up. First they only heard the playful moan of a breeze, growing in speed and momentum. But soon a hurricane had enveloped the room, throwing books at stone walls and loose papers into faces. One of the book cases started to rock dangerously, although you could see Kichea was trying to avoid knocking it.

"STOP, I BELIEVE YOU, JUST STOP," Link tried to bellow over the wind, but Kichea showed no signs of slowing down. The window blasted open, the tornado picked up Link and Zelda and carried them outside. They rose higher and higher, but their shouting seemed to do nothing.

"Enough," Zelda's words echoed on the whirlwind, and in a flurry, they both were sat back inside the library, a mass of papers and books lying opened and slightly battered on the floor, and Kichea was lying by them, chocking.

"See...," She whispered weakly, she had used up a lot of energy, and gave a meek cough before using one of the scattered books as a pillow.

"Link," Zelda shot him a look of annoyance, amusement and seriousness at the same time. Link was tempted to point out that he never asked Kichea to do anything like that, but decided against it and knelt by Kichea's head. "We can talk later when Kichea feels stronger, is that fine?"

*------*

Kasztan gave a sleepy whinny, and pawed at the grass, before nibbling it carefully.
"Shh, people are still sleeping, I'm not even sure if the Lady is awake yet," shutting the potion shop's door quietly behind her. The shelves inside were bare, nobody was behind the counter. But that was because this was not the right shop. Sneaking around the back, Kichea walked in to a room, hazy with the amount of smoke and incense.

*------*

"She seems to like smoke, I was there once or twice-" Link interrupted, but one cold glare from the girls made him silent.

*------*

Suspended in mid air by a ball of wind, the ghost feather lay in Kichea's palm. The smoke filled up her lungs, making Kichea give a hearty cough. The incense burnt her nostrils, but the foggy surroundings did not appear to worry the Shopkeeper in the slightest. Kichea showed quietly told the old Lady her problem, watching the frown deepen on her forehead.
Diving into the beaded curtains, she came out with a bundle of books. Waiting patiently, Kichea barely saw the Lady, as her nose was in a book most of the time. Her eyes darting from page to page, paper being leafed through thoroughly, books flung across the room. Eventually she grabbed a bowl, and started to mix different herbs and spices in, their aroma intimidated by the heavy incense.
Occasionally eyeing the books on the counter, she finished embroidering and sewing a little pouch, the glowing in the faint light of the shop. Slipping the feather in to the purse, Kichea paid the Lady and hurried back to Lon Lon Ranch, the sun was nearly completely uncovered by the huge trees, and she didn't want Malon to worry about her again.

*------*

Link was a bit surprised, but luckily Zelda spoke first.

"May I hold the purse and feather Kichea?" Zelda quietly asked. Kichea handed the shiny bag to her. Zelda turned the Old Lady's work upside down, high in the air. A colourful ghost feather glided smoothly down and passed through Zelda's hand. She caught the feather in the bag and gave it back to Kichea. A maid scampered into the library and bobbed a curtsy.

"Princess, His Highness requests for your presence at dinner. May I escort you to your bedroom?" She queried politely. "Oh, and should I clean this mess as soon as I have sent the message?" Clever enough not to ask why books lay on the floor.

"No thank you, I am quite able to do so myself, and that would seem like a good idea," Zelda answered irritated. Once the maid had nodded and left the room, Zelda turned back to Kichea and Link. "I must go now, can we talk again tomorrow morning?" They all agreed, so Zelda left hastily.

"I need to go, I expect supper will be waiting for me in the kitchen at Lon Lon Ranch," remarked Kichea before leaving the room. Link was left dumbfounded standing by himself in the messy library.
"So she had told the truth? And Kichea can control the wind?" Link wondered out loud, but quietly, in case the maid came in quicker than expected. After a few more minutes Link left the room still deep in thought.

Hope you enjoyed it!
