Sakurai quit HAL in 2003, and soon after made himself a promise that Melee was his last Smash bros game.
Nintendo didn't want to give up on such a popular franchise, so Nintendo, not HAL, started production of a new Smash Bros.
You know what they were going to do? They were going to take Melee, tweak the graphics a little, add online play, and release it. :|
Sakurai didn't like this, and with some persuading from Eiji Aunoma, Sakurai started work on Brawl.
I'm glad, even if this is 100% for sure the last Smash game.

I heard Sakurai isn't the sequel type. That's why he left HAL lab along with some other reasons. He just wasn't happy working there. I'm not sure if he owns Kirby's rights. He trusts HAL lab enough to continue the Kirby franchise. I read this on Wikipedia. Just search Sakurai. It also says he lives in an apartment near the office where Brawl was developed and he has a lot of cats.

you have to admit though, Nintendo has been a little too re-release happy with all their games. Sure it's easier to make but sheesh one NEW mario game every six years while we get remakes of every mario game before Galaxy besides Sunshine in between the two X_X;;
