Title: Best covers ever?
Post by: major tom on January 21, 2008, 12:50:30 PM
Contrary to a thread about bad covers, here's a thread about good ones. What do you consider the best covers ever?

Guns N' Roses- Knockin' On Heaven's Door (Bob Dylan)
Led Zeppelin- In My Time Of Dying (Old blues song, forgot the writer)
Sex Pistols- I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone (Made famous by The Monkees)
Black Flag- Louie, Louie (Pretty sure we all know this song)
Thin Lizzy- Whiskey In The Jar (Traditional)
Geordie- House Of The Rising Sun (Traditional, made famous by The Animals)
Grand Funk Railroad- Gimme Shelter (The Rolling Stones)
Aerosmith- Train Kept a-Rollin' (The Yardbirds)
Cream- Crossroads (Robert Johnson)
Velvet Revolver- Psycho Killer (The Talking Heads)

I don't feel like restating a few of the good ones, you already mentioned, so I won't.

Here's some others though.

Led Zeppelin- Babe I'm Gonna Leave You (traditional, original writer may be Anne Brendon)
Led Zeppelin- Gallows Pole (traditional)
Led Zeppelin- You Shook Me (Muddy Waters)
Jimi Hendrix Experience- All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan)
The Byrds- Mr. Tambourine Man (Bob Dylan)
Santana- Black Magic Woman (Fleetwood Mac)
The Doors- Backdoor Man (Howlin' Wolf)
The Beatles- Dizzy Miss Lizzy (Larry Williams)
The Beatles- Roll Over Beethoven (Chuck Berry)
The Beatles- Twist and Shout (Top Notes)
Tool- No Quarter (Led Zeppelin)
John Lennon- Stand by Me (Ben E. King)
Van Halen- Oh Pretty Woman (Roy Orbison)
Derek and the Dominos- Little Wing (Jimi Hendrix Experience)

I'd also like to mention Dream Theater, since they've done pretty kickass covers of entire albums during some live shows, like Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon and Iron Maiden's Number of the Beast.

The Black Keys also have a good number of covers that are old blues songs, but I don't remember which songs. I think "Do the Rump" is one of them.

Live and Let Die - Guns N' Roses is one of my favorites.

Oh, and there's Van Halen's cover of You Really Got Me. >_>

It's okay, but the original is infinitely better. The moaning in it annoys me to no end, and Roth's vocals are kind of...overdone. Too dramatic. He tries too hard sometimes.

I guess you'd understand it better if you intercourse ing loved Van Halen like me. Roth CAN NOT sing. The best he can do is a high pitched scream, like the ones he does in On Fire. Roth's lack of vocal abilities is a huge part of the Van Halen experience. A band with three great musicians, one a virtuoso, along with a bozo who can't sing? Awesome.

Oh, I do like Van Halen quite a bit. I'm just not really a fan of that particular cover.

I think it rules. But their cover of Pretty Woman is probably their best cover.

Oh, and everyone listen to Soundgarden - Come Together. It sounds weird (imo Aerosmith did this song best) but it sounds kinda cool too.

I listened to that a few months ago, pretty good. I like how they found a way to include a bassist, since the White Stripes don't have one.

...the song was first recorded more than ten years before The Yardbirds even touched it.

Oh. I dinnit know :/

It's one of those cases where a song becomes famous for a cover version. People associate Black Magic Woman with Santana, Hush with Deep Purple, Louie Louie with the Kingsmen, I Love Rock N' Roll with Joan Jett, Hey Joe with Jimi Hendrix... the list goes on.

Train Kept A-Rollin' is probably best known today for the Aerosmith version, and Aerosmith based that on the Yardbirds version.

All Along the Watchtower - Covered by Hendrix, originally by Bob Dylan
Phish played the White Album entirely on it's anniversery,  it was amazing.
Dream Theater played some things on tour too, like Dark Side of The Moon i believe.
