Yes, try RD. No, don't buy PoR. You don't need to play PoR to know any bits about the story. You can get along just fine. Also, PoR had some really boring battles. RD is more enjoyable on the whole with dialogue and with gameplay.

It's really not a difficult concept. The PoR plot is mentioned so often it's a pretty simple thing to pick up on.

I like the whole story more than just half of one....
Besides it's a great game...

And the battles aren't boring. If they are, then turn off the animations...

It's not that great of a game. If he were going for rental value, RD would easily win. It's got better dialogue, play, graphics, and it's much smoother than PoR ever was..
