Ever since day the days of bleeps and bloops strung together to make a music sound. Music has existed in games.
Many say music is one of the most important parts of a game. It is said that good music adds to the experiance and the overall mood trying to be portrayed. I have heard many people use the example think of how Zelda and Final Fantasy would be without there music.
On the other hand music is not easy to make and it adds time to the development proccess since you need to have the right tracks play at the right time. Not to mention there are always the people who complain that the tracks are not good enough for this part or are too much here and such.
So what is your take on this particular subject?
My volume's often off. Music is important, but like graphics, generally does not make the gameplay (unless it's Guitar Hero, that goes without saying :P).
Your creating too much serious discussion. >:(

Seriously though, I think music is great to have in games. Resident Evil 4 is a good example I thought. However there are just some games that you can live with by not listening to the audio as those are the games witch I listen to my own music. That's all I can think of at the moment.
Get the Halo score and listen to it a few times. That is a good example of prime game music.
I find it a very important part, because if the music is great, it lets you enjoy the game all the more. I find people who turn off the sound to be party poopers or not appreciative of good music.

I can't play a game without music. Music is just...it does add to the mood. Like..take Tales of Symphonia for example. There's a lot of sad/emotional parts in ToS, and the music that goes along with that part in the game is just perfect. It's hard for me to explain really, but just...I have to have music when playing a game, it just wouldn't feel right without it.

no, not at all, I'm just saying that if you're going to play a game, play the WHOLE game and experience the WHOLE experience.

Oh. I just prefer it quiet, mainly with handheld games. It's recently changed though. I've listened to SMG's music. Pretty good.
Music is extremely important to me. It's usually what I remember the best about games other than what they look like. I'm very judgmental on music in games, particularly whether or not the style really fits.
If it weren't for music, I probably wouldn't like DKC2 as much as I do.

The DKC games had good soundtracks.
The music makes the games as much as it makes the movies, i think LoZ would suck without music

i agree with that. :)
in my opinion music is one of the most important factors in a video game. The music really defines and sets the mood of a scene. Sure, you can play it without the music, but it just won't be the same. There won't be the same emotion as it would have with the music.

Super Smash Bros Brawl is going to have a HUGE effect on in-game music.
I say it adds to the mood of the game.
Think of it like this:
What if movies didn't have music?
It wouldn't give as much of a mood.
Same with game music.
Music is essential for a game to be truly good.
Take System Shock 2, for example. You are the last surviving person on a gigantic starship filled with zombies, aliens, hacked robots, and crazy AI's; all of which want to kill you. The game's spooky soundtrack does an excellent job of adding to the game's atmosphere. Without a soundtrack that helps set the game's mood, SS2 would not have been as great as it was.
So yes, music plays a very important role in videogames.
Try playing a game like Resident Evil 4 or Bioshock or Halo without a soundtrack.
It takes away the mood of the game.
