Title: A bet with Smash Bros sales
Post by: tollhouse2006 on February 11, 2008, 01:57:14 PM
OKay, today I made a bet with a friend that Brawl will sell more copies on it's first day in the U.S than Halo 3 did on it's first day in the U.S.

The two of us wagered 5 dollars.
Halo has about 2.8 million copies sold on the first day in the U.S.
Brawl has to get over that amount of copies sold on the first day in the U.S.  We are not counting Japan's sales because Halo isn't popular in Japan so my friend thinks that's unfair.

I doubt that Brawl will sell more then Halo 3. Halo 3 is much more well known, and it was advertised much more. Halo 3 probably sold more on pre-orders then Brawl will in the whole first week. >_>

Smash Bros has been around since 1998.  It's older than Halo and since it's T it's more suitable to different age groups.  Melee was gamecube's best seller so Brawl's gonna do really good but the lack of Wiis in the US might be the main problem.

Dumb bet. Halo 3 had the most pre-orders of any game ever.  How much money does he get?

It will sell alot but nowhere as much as Halo. It was one of the most anticipated games ever, was advertised everywhere. Age group has nothing to do with it since you hear a bunch of kids on Halo anyway.

Pretty stupid for making that bet.

We should make bets on Tollhouse losing this bet.

over 9000 dollars on him losing.

Losing on the first day bet. If you had bet OVERALL sales over time, then you might win.
Halo actually has competition on it's system, but Smash has none on it's system.
I think overall it might sell over time, but no way on the first day. NOTHING oculd beat that launch

It's not going to happen.  Halo 3 had huge marketing and PR behind it simply because Microsoft could afford to waste that much money promoting the game.

Lord..the Japanese were hyped for Brawl, and they didn't even sell half of that on the first day.....I am tempted to lock this for idiocity....but why not have fun?

Your kindness shows no bounds!

but thinking about it, it may not sell as much on the first day, but in the long run it might win

Halo 3 had so much hype/ad power it isn't funny. It was a stupid bet, and I stand by my statement. If he wins the bet, I will publically apologize, but I am laughing hard now! :D

What do you expect?

All 1st person shooter games are the same.
There are many different versions of 1st person shooters, but basics are basics...it's the same thing.

Bleh.

As some here have said, I think SSBB will out sell Halo in the future with a long ongoing increase in sales as
time goes by...

Its reasonably fun.
I would really like to get Halo... but i don't want an Xbox for one game and Brawl gets all my free time after March 8.

I think Cornwad was the only one supportive here.  I did the bet for fun.  It was only five bucks so it's nothing if I lose.  This topic's just fun.  That's why it shouldn't be locked.

well thats gonna be hard to know right now
nintendo needs to start advertising or only hard core gamers will know about its release
the biggest factor is that many more people own wiis around the world than 360s
nintendo has a huge advantage over that
nintendo fans typically have been waiting for a real big game since after launch
the only real advantage that the 360 had is how well it advertises.  hell they even had halo drinks :|
if ssbb doesnt surpass halo3 sales on the first day then i am 100% positive that it will in the first week

I guess my Grievous avatar didn't throw you off at all.  Yes, I'm the master of cookies.  But since Halo 3 was such a huge hit Brawl may not have a chance of getting higher sales on the first day because there aren't even commercials yet.  Halo had commercials two months before I think.

This is just for fun.  But if I win this bet everybody on here will respect me.  Mwhaaa!!!  Also I'll win 5 bucks!
We will never respect you.
Why not?  My awesomeness meter is off the chart.  Everybody one here thinks I'm a fool for this bet but when Brawl gets more sales than shame on you people  :D
I will always respect the man who is the master of all cookies! :D

and Halo 3 was pretty bad...at least to me...
I guess my Grievous avatar didn't throw you off at all.  Yes, I'm the master of cookies.  But since Halo 3 was such a huge hit Brawl may not have a chance of getting higher sales on the first day because there aren't even commercials yet.  Halo had commercials two months before I think.
Tollhouse is the king of all cookies, I definately remember that! And Grevious is my favorite star wars character! The droids are just cool, and he has 4 armz!!!!111111!!!!!

lol, and the only commercial brawl is probably going to have is "wii would like to play!"  :D
i am geting so sick of the wii would like to play things!!

If Brawl does get alot of commercials do you guys think it'll be close.  My friend said Halo 3 sold 2.8 million copies on the first day.  Does that sound accurate.   That's alot.

It took Brawl 2 weeks to sell 1 million copies.

I believe there is somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.5-2 million North American pre-orders.

I think we'll do alright.
Brawl sold... 700,000 copies in Japan on it's first day...
How many people are in Japan?
and if we add that to american copies...

i'm sure we'll beat halo. :)

I only have one thing to say:

Find a time machine, reverse to the time you made the bet and call it off. Cause from the looks of it, you just lost whatever it is you bet.  :-\

(Hope it wasn't money, or at least a lot)  :P

I doubt that Brawl will sell more then Halo 3. Halo 3 is much more well known, and it was advertised much more. Halo 3 probably sold more on pre-orders then Brawl will in the whole first week. >_>
Smash Bros has been around since 1998.  It's older than Halo and since it's T it's more suitable to different age groups.  Melee was gamecube's best seller so Brawl's gonna do really good but the lack of Wiis in the US might be the main problem.
It will sell more copyies over time but on the first day im not so sure, what were the stakes of the bet

It was only 5 bucks.  But even though the bet's not a big deal this makes a good topic.  If WiiPlay came in second place and got beat by Halo 3, Brawl should have a good chance.  I thought Wii play was pure crap cuz there was only like 6 games in their and half of them were fun but that game I'm sure is more for family and not hardcore gamers.  The Wii also beat the XBox 360 on the market so shouldn't Brawl have an advantage?
