I LOVED Sonic on the Genesis, so...yeah, my vote goes to Sonic.
Mario, at least his games have not gotten as bad as Sonic's

Current Generation? Mario all the way. The last great Sonic game I've played was Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. Everything else since then has been crap. (Excluding M&S, which wasn't half bad)
