If you pay for it, you will get a better service. Just compare Nintendo Wifi to Xbox Live.
See what $50 a year does? It makes the experience so much better. No FCs, voice chat, demos, and friends lists.
It depends on what Nintendo actually DOES. Keep FC's and charge, hten no way in hell I'm paying for it. No voice chat and charge, then no way in hell I'm paying for it.
Basically, if it isn't Xbox Live, then it's not worth paying for
Well, for one reason, I want online for one reason. To play against other people. I don't care about other crap! Plus, with how hot the Wii is selling, why should Nintendo need to charge for online service?

more like if it isn't Live quality online then it isn't worth paying for.
Hell, the PS3's online should be the BASIC online for any game system nowadays, but Nintendo manages to sink even lower than that.

because we are cheap and would rather spend our cash upgrading our PC's and buying more games...duh.
Pretty sure it's because most people are too cheap to actually pay.

Cheap? Sir you offend me. The correct term is "Miser".
...!
OMG PENNY ACQUIRED!
Because I can find plenty of games that I can play online for free and have just as much fun as if I was using a pay service. The only difference between the two is I have to pay for one. Additionally, I see no point in having to pay a monthly or yearly fee for a service I might only use rarely in a game.
lol at the comics.
yeah seriously, why do we have to pay for that? nintendo has so much money and their worried about doing more channels...GET A SUPER COMPUTER NERD AND LET HIM TO THE DIRTY WORK FOR YOU! AND LET US HAVE FUN WITHOUT PAYING FOR IT! jeez, if they do this to brawl, oh man i would like to legally sue them.
If there are no dedicated servers and it's all just peer-to-peer, why should I pay for online? User names, voice chat (or at least text chat), demos, and friend lists have been pretty much standard on PC games for a long time. What's the point of paying for what should be basic features for online implementation anyway? Nintendo may have gimped such features, but that doesn't excuse MS from ripping you off.
I will ask this: what do you think Xbox Live is worth paying for? Is it worth the cost because it allows you to connect to other people across the internet to play games? Don't you already pay for internet service to do exactly that? Didn't you already pay for the system that has the capability to connect to the internet built in? And didn't you already pay for the games that have networking code already programmed? Or do you think that Xbox Live is worth paying for just to have a user name and keep track of poop? LOL.

Wow....that's a really good point. The service should be free. After all, all of valves games have free online, Sony (Who has the smallest wallet as of now) has free online, and even the DS and PSP have free online! Why should we even have to suggest pay-for-play?!

Because what you get for free with Nintendo and what you get for free with Valve are completely different things?
Remember, Nintendo only does things for money ever since 2005.
X-box live is worth paying for because it's a good darn online system.
if nintendo would make something that equals that, or even comes near it, hell yes I'd pay for online. but they won't, because they're Nintendo, and they continue to live in the past, even though they claim to be trying to revolutionize the industry.

Good point, but it's probably just due to hte system per system thing (i.e., make a freind in Halo, you don't have to try and find them again in Gears of War), and the like. Which is probably where all the complications arise. Still, it's a little expensive, but until it's not hte best online system for games, then it's at least worth paying for.
Nintendo has no right to charge anything since they have the worst online, like, ever. Hell, the PS2 has better online, and it's nine years old already!

I'm not "against" it personally.. you can pay if you want.. but I'd rather get the service for free than pay for it because it's dang good. I'd rather have a good service for free than a good service I'm paying for. I dunno, but I like keeping my money when I don't have to spend it.. that's just how I feel..
I also don't like how I bought a $450 console and it doesn't even have built-in wi-fi. It's has all this hard-drive yet nothing I can download onto it! I have to go out of my way to purchase an external device for $100 more and then pay ANOTHER $50 to even do anything online once I'm connected.. and then I can spend MORE money on stuff that wasn't included in game. ~_~
I dunno, I'd rather not spend that much money when I'm not going to play games online 24/7..
Anyways, there used to be a time when games were cool and fun without online play.. and not it seems like those games are in the minority... :(
I think my PS3 is great though.. I turn it on, connect to my network, and I'm online downloading demos, trailers, and more.. all for free. I personally think that's better than paying...

1. No, you can't. with Wi-Fi, there's always tons of lag when you play against people in countries far away.
2. I don't know if you understood what I posted. Basically, everything you listed there is largely a part of something that should be a one-time payment at best, if it should cost anything at all because it's basically worth little or it's something you already payed for. And many you listed are not "services" that MS offers with Xbox Live, but are inherent to peer-to-peer gaming networks.
The reason why NWFC is so gimped is not because Nintendo can't afford to implement them, but because they are like an overprotective parent and don't want to implement them by principle. And this is pretty evident in Sakurai's interview.
It's your discretion if you prefer spending $50 a year to download demos, to say, buying one more full game. I'm not gonna argue with that, because that is up to your tastes. But what you're actually spending the $50/year on is for MS to maintain a server that basically is limited to handling queries, storing user data, and having an online shop. Pretty much every company and website in existence would see that as part of operating cost. It's baffling why MS would be so bold to force everyone to pay for such a negligible cost, especially considering their size. I bet they're making good money too on this scam of an online tollbooth.

which is why it is so sad that nintendo doesn't have the vast majority of the things I listed. I agree, Xbox live is hideously overpriced, but at the same time, you do get the best online system.
There's also Call of Duty 4.
Which is thousands of times better than Halo 3.

Well, I'm guessing that if Nintendo's online community strategy is to have everyone be an anonymous entity of a faceless and voiceless legion, then everything they have done so far in terms of online gaming is consistent with their philosophy.
Also, I think the only reason why people do not mind paying for XBL is that it's the only way that you can play 360 games online. The reason why MS can get away with this is because the cost is somewhat nominal and that there are more games with online play compared to the current competition. If you bought some games and found out that you've been locked out of an important aspect of those games, I think most people wouldn't mind spending an additional $50 to access them for a year just so that they can get the most out of the purchase and don't feel cheated. It's a sleazy thing though.

Pretty sure it's because most people are too cheap to actually pay.
Cheap? Sir you offend me. The correct term is "Miser".
...!
OMG PENNY ACQUIRED!
Well, I'm against paying for online play and I'm not cheap. I see it as 1. unnecessary, and 2. If we have to pay, there's a chance my parents won't let me use the internet in the first place.
Do you people realize you are paying for online service for what you are doing right now? ::)

It's not my reasoning, it's my parents >:( . They don't mind paying for internet service they'll DEFINITELY use, but mind paying for a service that I will only use. It's stupid. And I can't pay for it becuase I don't have a job yet >:(
Sorry, but talking about makes me fume. And I have a short temper, too.

Having internet access =/= getting to play games I already payed for online.
To be able to play games online, you have to have an internet connection...so basically you're paying to connect to the internet twice: Once to have internet, and then again to play online through that internet. Which I think is pointless and stupid process. Hence I don't play any games that require monthly or annual fees to play. I think the concept is stupid and a waste of my money.
On the other hand, I see a point in paying for internet access: I can then basically have free range on the internet, playing whatever games I want, downloading what I want, uploading what I want, going where I want. I don't have to pay additional fees to use certain aspects of the internet like I would for most online games. And that is where the difference between the two lies. Online gaming you are paying for limited internet access on top of your current internet bill, while the internet connection you pay for to get access and then have unrestricted internet.
