Title: Nayrman's thoughts on the game in general
Post by: Nayrman on March 09, 2008, 03:15:12 PM
Yep, after being awake for roughly 36 hours in anticipation/playing of the game (and playing the last 18 hours straight), I finally have my thoughts on many aspects of the game itself. Well, here goes.

1. Gameplay/Playability: Its...wierd. It's like Melee, yet nothing like Melee. To put it simply the game is a lot "floatier" than Melee was..which is good and bad. Good that recoveries are more fair now, since the sucky people aren't drastically far behind anymore. On the down side, it makes it really hard to get some good kills without getting a perfect hit on them. If  you have a main in Melee, prepare to train again, since even people I played with really well feel rather differently. In fact, the only person that felt natrual to me was Sonic...which is wierd since he's practically the most floaty character in the game. Although, if you played Melee even a bit you can play this no problem.

On the bright side, the AI is MUCH better than Melee. They even edgeguard at times and actaully mix up moves every now and then. Of ocurse, eventually  we will find patterns, but at least its not the "DUR SPAM UP B DUR!" CPU's from before.

2. Online: VERY LITTLE experience on this. It wouldn't surprise me if the full thing wasn't up for a day or two with all the new activity Nintendo has to cater to now. I had all of 3 matches online, one completely FROZE (probably someone in Japan), and the other two were rather laaggy. By that I mean that I'd press attack and it'd take a second for my character to respond. It's not the end of the world, but its obviously something Nintendo has to fix...since it's not a connection issue since my PS3 is running 60fps online with fifty people in one match.

3. Subspace: Unless you plan on getting everyone through that method (which I recommend you don't unless you just hate doing vs. matches...it took me all of about 2 hrs total to get eveyone with stages and music and such), DO NOT PLAY IT. It's completely useless, and it seems all the bad things said about it are indeed true. It was rather dull and mundane, and frankly it's just a button masher. There is no skill involved, just stay alive as long as you can and spam attacks. I repeat do not play it...(save to get Ike's music, which is only a few missions, so w/e). Yea, the cinematics are nice and all, but honestly it seems as if there was little to no thought put into this. Half the enemies are pallet swaps of the "generic bad guy" model, and the rest hardly put up much of a threat. Bosses have unfairly high knockback to all of their attacks, and the last few missions are insanely frustation ("The Great Maze" = worst idea ever for this mode).  I'm sure some people might find it fun for a while, but if you're expecting something above average...don't get your hopes up.

Otherwise everything else is either as expected or simply not a big deal enough to blabber about for a  while.
Now, if you'll excuse me *yawn* time for some sleep.... been up for nearly two straight days ya know  ;D

Good info...

Although, I enjoy Subspace.
My Wi-Fi doesn't work, so i bet its Nintendo. (I can connect but cant find people)

I noticed the floatiness, but its generally fine since all characters are subjected to this.

I LOVE IT

I love it besides Subsapce...I just couldn't get into it and it made no sense to me...
I'm having the same problem with online. Im sure it's just Nintendo trying to set  everything up.

The floatiness will just take some time to get used to. I suppose playing Smash 64 would be good to go backk to for you guys who don't have Brawl yet.
I think it plays more like 64 than it does Melee in some respects

One thing I found out... and it is a little annoying...
Is the MASSIVE lag time before and after a smash for some characters.

Ike's and Lucas take wayyy too long.

The lag on moves must be an equalizer mechanic, I don't like it though -_- but I love Brawl :)

Yeah.
Although, a tad more speed would be appreciated.

I find the game painfully floaty. And as of now, I'm really not a fan of the game. Of course, that is probably because I slaved over vs matches, special things, and sse (which sucks large hairy sweaty balls), so I haven't had any time to enjoy myself, and going right from one of those modes to vs is meh. I NEED SOME PEOPLE FOR ONLINE.

Also, like said, AI is a lot smarter. I was facing Peach in SSE (I think) and she float canceled a bair on when I was trying to recover. :\

I notice the game is a bit floaty

SSE seems a bit pointless to me

CPU are indeed smarter than they were in melee. Especially lvl 9

It feels totally different, but I still love the game.  ;D

I haven't been able to play too much, but so far the only character that seems to work for me is Mario.

Subspace, to me, was fine except for the bosses. There is no strategy. You just hit what you can reach. No weakpoints. Pah.

Ok, whats "Floaty"?
