When people unlock charecters with the vs match..is that just a normal brawl? and does it have to be with other people or can it just be AI?

To unlock characters through Brawls you can play with either friends or AI.
I've unlocked [spoiler]Ness and Marth that way. :)[/spoiler]

That's how I unlocked, Ness, Marth, Snake, and Luigi.
Special Brawl: Stamina, Flower, set your enemy at 1%. Fastest way to do it.
