What I never understood is why would the date being messed up completely screw up a computer?

Because most computers made in the 20th century only went up to December 31st, 1999?

The computers that weren't Y2K compliant rolled the date to January 1st, 1900.

The major concern was that computers that controlled nuclear weapons would malfunction and launch.
