Advanced Techs for Beginners, Edition 1.
Ice Climbers and the Art of De-Syncing
As many of you know, Ice Climbers rose to the top of Melee's competitive play ladder in the last few years.
Why, you may ask? The simple answer is De-Syncing.
First, lets get a little more acquainted with the characters few ever play as, and see what this technique is and why it works.
1. Ice Climbers-The Ice Climbers are unique in the fact that they are 2 different characters. One is controlled by the player, Popo, while the other is controlled by a computer.
Nana is designed to copy your, or Popo's, moves hence they follow each, have a double smash where both of their hammers attack at once, and both jump at the same time.
However, I'm sure you have seen Nana get taken away in the heat of combat, where she needs to get back to her companion. While this is happening, you may notice she can perform some attacks at random while you
are trying to fend off attackers by yourself. This is the basis for De-syncing. Just because Nana isn't with you, doesn't mean she isn't responding to your button presses.
2. De-syncing basics-The most common, and easy, way to use De-syncing effectively in a battle is through a grab.
When grabbing, only one of the Ice Climbers grabs the opponent. At this time, you can perform some simple de-syncing combos that can be deadly once mastered.
To make sure your de-syncing is effective, remember this: Once you are in a grab, Nana is free to do what she wants. While Popo is grabbing, Nana can do a array of attacks ranging from smashes to aerials and even special moves because she is still picking up on your button presses.
3. Simple Combos and Uses-Here are a few beginner combos that will also demonstrate how useful this technique can be.
Type 1- Throw SmashThis is the easiest to perform, and takes very little practice before you can master it.
Simply grab an opponent, perform a Down Throw (or and Up Throw if the enemy has low or no damage).
As Popo goes through the frames of throwing, perform a smash attack.
This causes Nana to perform a smash attack while Popo is throwing, meaning as he lets go of the throw Nana will smash down and cause extra damage or even kill if at high percentage.
The most useful smash for this is a Down Smash, since it is almost guaranteed to hit.
Type 2- Throw AerialThis uses the same concept as above.
Perform a down throw but as the throw is going on make Nana jump by simply pressing the jump button (You will need to use a jump button, it makes the technique easier!) and as she jumps in the air the throw will be almost finished. As the enemy flies in the air, Nana is free to perform an aerial without the enemy having one shred of hope to block it.
The most useful is probably the forward Aerial, as it can spike enemies down leaving them wide open for a Smash.
Type 3- Special Throws. This technique uses a completely new concept. By repeatedly hitting the grab button, you character will hit the enemy without throwing him.
Perform this action, and while doing this you can use many moves such as Ice Shot, Ice Breath, Squall Hammer (Very effective if used in a forward throw) etc.
These are often used to do a lot of damage in a short time. It is possible to do nearly 50% damage in one grab if you are experienced.

Thanks for reading. These are just the basics, so I challenge you to work on it and come up with your own!
Happy Smashing.

yea i used some of this when i used them. Just by grabbing them with Popo just use the C stick to have Nana attack. I like doing the combos that come with grabbing. I used to just hold Z and roll back to desynch them. That might be the easiest that i done so far.
Yeah, it's amazing how it feels your controlling 2 people at once. But Hector, you mistakenly spelled Ice Climbers w/an N in your title :P

Heres a little trick.
Once you use a down throw, use Nana's Squall hammer so that the enemy is caught after the throw.
Then, as Popo, run forward and grab again.
Works about twice in most characters, but twice is all you need seeing as if used correctly it can deal over 60 damage.

oh yea of course. when it comes to human characters i tend to no regrab them since they sometimes tech away so instead of trying to chain grab i just use a down smash with both of them after Nana hits them
And I thought that desyncing was gone from Brawl. :|

Its hilarious when Nana just randomly goes out on her own.
Like today, I was blasted away but Nana was untouched so when I air Dodged she grabbed the guy I was fighting.
Fun to use, thats for sure.
