Title: Can someone explain to me how to animate in Gimp?
Post by: Kilroy on April 22, 2008, 10:37:30 PM
I'm extremely confused, here. I've got two layers, but whenever I export/save as .gif etc., it just stays as one frame.

1 layer =/= 1 frame

Yes, I got that.

When I save it, the frames are combined as one -_-

Waitwaitwaitwait...

One layer isn't one frame?

Then what is?

Here are some links that could help

http://gimp.org/tutorials/Simple_Animations/
http://gimp.org/tutorials/Advanced_Animations/

Also, when you save it, do NOT merge visible layers, make sure that "Save as Animation" is checked.

I know nothing about photoshop/gimp stuff... but uh...

I think any one image can have multiple layers.. that has nothing to do with making a gif though...

Each frame in the gif can contain images with multiple layers.. but by only having one image (layered with a second image).. it still counts as one image towards only one frame in a gif... you should put the second image in the next frame as opposed to layering both into one image... >_>

I have no idea what I'm talking about... am I right..? @_@

Didn't help at all, seeing as everything that they're doing doesn't pertain to me.

It's a two-frame animation. Charizard Mouth-Open, Charizard Mouth-Closed. The basic animation in Pearl/Diamond.

And what they ARE telling me to do, for some reason isn't there -_-

Ok, open up one of the images and then open up the other as a layer, and then you need to rename each layer and add, for example, (1000ms) at the end of the name for each layer. (It can be any number, but it needs to be in parenthesis and have ms at the end, And for reference one second equals 1000ms) To see if it as the right speed, go to Filters> Animation> Playback, and the hit the play button.
Also when you save as a .gif check the "Save as Animation" box and then export it and save it.
