Title: The True Meaning of a Perfect "10": A MGS4 Review

*Note: This is going on the Sony, Power On, and Review Boards*

Many a bullpoop review magazine or site always give the game of the year a "perfect 10". Without much a doubt, I've played pretty much all these games. None of them were close to tens. The list in includes the likes of GTA: San ANdreas, Halo 3, and Nintendogs. Good games, but I'll be darned if they deserve the "perfect 10" many of these places give. Hell, even Bioshock wasn't perfect, and that's the closest anyone has gotten since Ocoraina of Time...until now. Well, okay, no game is "perfect" (based on minor annoyances every game has and personal preference), but hell, this is the closest anyone has gotten since OoT (IMO).

Gameplay: This game takes everything that was great about previous Metal Gear Solid games and fine tunes it to perfection. Gone is the clunky camo feature from MGS3 and replaced with a new "OctoCamo" suit which blends in to any surface once you've laid down. I was wondering how Konami was going to balance out this obviously overpowered feature, but it's finely tuned for the game. Sneaking is spot on, and as amusing as ever. However, for the more "gun-ho" players who like FPS's or shooters in general, this game can also be played as a runner/shooter game. I think I've played the first act three different ways by now and all worked incredibally well. The most important thing from MGS3 is that the entire game is geniunely fun. Shooting is fun, as much as the sneaking is. After all, who doesn't love hiding under good 'ol Cardboard Box, have a guy walk past, pop up, knock him out, and then hide back underneath it. The "Drebin" feature (to purchase laundered guns, ammo, etc.) is also a good update. No longer do you completely rely on random drops by enemies, but can now purchase weapons on the fly from a gun launderer named Drebin (easily my vote for best new character...he's just so amusing). The only problem is that for crafty spenders (like myself) who will just keep the few good guns and save our points for ammo during critical boss fights, the game is a tad easy. But hey, that's what "Big Boss Mode" is for.
Gameplay: 10/10

Graphics: The best looking console game ever. Sure there are cinematics that "look" better, but nothing comes to mind in terms of pure detail and astounding visuals in the game. Is there a bland texture if youre looking for one? Sure, but I defy someone to find a game that doesnt. The entire game is beautifully detailed with gorgeous cinematics (ALL pre-rendered...no CGI here). It's hard to believe you're playing a game at times, it looks more like a feature length film with these visuals. Kojima Productions did a fantastic job with the system, showing how powrful the PS3 truley can be. And on my high-def TV, it only looks better. You're jaw will drop when you stop looking at online vids, and see the real thing. One cutscene probably got more work on it than the entirety of some whole games do. I mean, seriously, this looks like it was made at Pixar or something. It's no wonder this game took forever to come out. Every look on screen is filled with the best quality visuals I've seen in a home console game. Everyone remember when the report of MGS4 not fitting on a Blu-Ray disc appeared, and everyone laughed at it saying it couldn't be true? Well, it may have. Hell, producing one screen of this game is enough to make the Wii explode. Sadly 360 afficionado's, you're not getting this game. Standard DVD discs aren't big enough.
Graphics: 10/10

Sound: I don't care that this is a game. The U.S. staff (David Hayter, etc.) of this game should win Oscar for best acting. When I said this felt more like an interactive movie, I meant it. Every emotion is squeezed out of these actors: Every one of Snake's grunts, the nervousness of Otacon, and screeches of the Gekko's, everything sounds natural and that it fits in the game. The music is also hollywood calibure. When Sakurai stated that Konami had fully orchestrated music for MGS4 with the Brawl version of "Theme of Love", he wasn't kidding. Seriously, if you thought Brawl's music was good, wait til you hear this game. And I thought for sure Brawl would easily win "Best Soundtrack" of the year...but now I'm not so sure. As a side and funny note: After installing the game on the PS3's hardrive (an eight minute wait), once it ends the Brawl clip when Snake appears plays: "Kept you waiting, huh?". Love it.
Sound: 10/10 - Hayter = Best VA in the universe

Presentation/Lasting Appeal: Okay, I will admit that this game is more suited to people who have played MGS titles before. But that's not to say a newbie couldn't enjoy this game. Tons of little easter eggs, fun tidbits, and the like are back. And even more for the MGS hardcore guys. What? Raiden is badass!? Another Psycho Mantis fight!? The biggest reason I think where this game shines, like I've stated before, is the multiple ways to play the same thing. You can play the entire game running around shooting, or you can be stealthy and not kill a single person. The choice is yours. I'm sure some freakish MGS nut has already beaten the hardest difficulty with a perfect rating. An interesting thing is that the is also online for this game. Admittingly, I've barely played it. It's not huge online or the main draw (like Call of Duty, per se), but it's a solid online that's a good side attraction. Besides, more online shooters need more stealth movements.
Presentation/Lasting Appeal: 10/10

Overall: 10/10
Those who know me well know I'm a really tough critic. Hell, I even found problems with Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy to not cut the "perfect" threshold I give only to Ocaraina of Time, Mario World, and Tetris. Fuck you Halo, move over GTA, you guys can't even compare to this game. This has the makings of one of the all time classics that will be remembered by all those who play it. By far the main reason to buy a PS3, and is so far my nomiation for game of the decade. When the only thing that's wrong with the game is "the gorgeous and entertaining on movie level quality cutscenes go on for too long", then you've got a winner. It's been 10 years since I've played a game I consider perfect, but it was so worth it. Kojima has set the bar high for everyone else in the industry. I'm going to have a hard time moving to anything else. This game is that darn good.

Looks like I'll have to play it, even though my biggest gaming pet peeve is Stealth.

Also, might to have to stop my bro from taking the PS3 to college if I like it like you do.

Will people who have never played the series like MGS4?

You'll definatley be lost at some plot points, but if you don't really trigger the "flashback" moments (completely optional by pressing "X" during certain cutscenes which shows pics of the scene/character/moment being mentioned from past games) you'll be fine.
Dude, I usually don't like Stealth games (hell, I hated the camo stuff in MGS3) but I love this game.

Yea, my brother got a PS3 with MGS4 and I didn't get a chance to play much before he went back to school, but from the little I have seen, It's an amazing game.

This gen seems to be bringing out the best in a lot of game series. Also bringing plenty of good new games to the table. Mostly on the PS3 and 360 though.

The Wii has Boom Blox and...

I honestly don't know.

All I know is that realism is nice in games, but what ever happened to a nice, cartoony, stylized game?

Besides TF2. At least Nintendo can say one thing: They are pretty much keeping stylistic graphics alive, aside from a few exceptions.

You'd be surprised, actually. It'll be up top of the board for a fair while, getting as many views as top of PO.

Wow, I never thought I would be able to like a stealth game until I played MGS4.
