Title: Christ, me and my mom are both arrogant.
Post by: Kilroy on June 26, 2008, 10:07:42 AM
Well, I tried to explain to my mom what happened to my laptop. Which was extremely hard, since I have no idea what happened, other than that Windows intercourse ed itself.

So, the conversation went like this.

"What's wrong with your laptop?"
"Windows is what's wrong"
"That doesn't make any sense"
"Yes it does. You see, Windows isn't a virus."
"What?"
"Viruses do something"
/me proceeds to show my mom what happens when I turn it on
"That's a virus."
"Windows isn't a virus."
/me proceeds to show my mom what happens when I use safe mode, which is the same thing, btw
"The virus is in system32, duh."
"I want to know what darned virus can edit what loads in safe mode so that it doesn't load the log-in screen."
"A good one."
My grandfather at this time walks out, making this 10x harder because he'll interupt after every sentence said and ask "wuts that lol".
"Jesus, the people down the road can hear you two, you're so loud! What the hell are you arguing about anyway?"
"I was cursed with having a son who is as arrogant as I am."
Laughter ensues
"So, what does he want to do if Mark fixes it?"
"Install Linux."
"What's Linux?"
"An operating system."
"What's an operating system?"
"Something like Windows. It makes the computer run like you'd see on commercials or something of the like."
"But what's so cool about Linux?"
"It's free."
"Which makes it a virus."
I swear, I wish my mother wasn't related to me. She deserved some sort of horrid pain for being so arrogant and ignorant at the same time.
I'm holding back cursing my mom out at this point, I sound retarded because I'm so angry.
"I know that you're supposed to know more than me, mom. That doesn't mean you're automatically smarter than me at something I do know a lot about."
"Well, maybe if you installed that anti-virus software I told you to, maybe you wouldn't have this problem!"

Said software is AOL/Mcafee antivirus/firewall/spyware scanner/Something that though Firefox was a threat. It's crappy, it uses at least 100 MB of RAM, and in general, sucks ass. I didn't install it because I knew that it wouldn't help me at all, and the fact that it was from AOL made me want to install it even less.

My mom is around the same anger level as me at this point, she sounds about as retarded as I do as we argue.
"Your father will fix this as soon as he gets home. That's guaranteed."
I facepalm'd
"What, call Geek Squad?"
"THAT'S IT! I'M DONE!"
My mom was in tears for some odd reason. Probably because she won't admit she's wrong >_>

So, yeah. I'm out of a laptop. 100% now. Because I'm arrogant, along with my mom.

So you didn't have any anti-virus installed when you got this "virus"?

No one to blame but yourself on that one.

"It's free."
"Which makes it a virus."

my dad's kinda like that, too, just because he downloaded some crap from obviously malicious websites and it screwed up his computer because he didn't have sufficient virus protection.

Well, you should've installed that anti virus, or got something free.
And, she's your mom. My mom knows diddly squat about computers! :P
It's best to say computer related things in simpler terms.
Like if she asks you what's wrong with your laptop, you should've said "It's broken because of viruses." or even simpler, "It's broken." ;)

He said it himself. He believes that a virus is causing this, and claims he didn't have any virus protection. Pretty self-explanatory.

I believe WINDOWS caused it.

Also, the fact that a system restore fixed it just confuses me to no end.

So windows caused it to get a virus? Windows doesn't just hand out errors without explanation.

It isn't a darned virus. How is it a virus if SAFE MODE DOES THE SAME THING AS STARTING IT UP NORMALLY.

It doesn't make any sense.

Same thing happened to me. My brother had limewire and turned off the virus protection. :|
We got a lot of viruses, and eventually the login screen just wouldn't load. I tried Safe Mode too.
The login stuff must've got messed up by the viruses.
Maybe it's sorta the same thing happening to you?

When I simply turn it on without doing anything (Safe Mode etc.), I get a blank screen with a mouse I can move around.

Safe mode does the exact same thing, except the resolution is 640x800. This can't be a virus, because Windows only loads necessary components to make it work. No drivers, no pretty graphics, nothing. Not even the background loads on the desktop. If it just gives me what this alleged "virus" does the same thing in safe mode, it can't be a virus. Something happened in Windows.
